Vicis Interimo; 30 Minutes to Kill
Category: TV and Film
Michael and Lori host this horror review podcast. The show’s name means “time to kill” in Latin. Each episode is about half an hour in length, which the hosts say is about the average person’s commute time to work. Reviews of horror movies and books are simple but complete including cinematography, acting, musical score, and plot. The likable hosts provide interesting trivia facts too. The show’s major drawback is the disorganization of episodes. While it’s clear the hosts have watched and analyzed the movie they are discussing, episodes tend to lack structure.

T3
Category: Technology
This light-hearted technology podcast is from the well-known publication of the same name. Hosts include Dan, Duncan, Chris, Luke, and Adam. While many hosts rotate through the episodes, Dan and Duncan are consistently there. Dan gives enthusiastic openings for each episode, and Duncan provides his weekly rants. This show is very entertaining with funny bantering and regular segments such as Here is the News, What You Have Been Tweeting, and Gadget of the Week.

Satan and the Lord Show
Category: TV and Film
Rarely do we come across a unique movie review show, but this podcast certainly is different. Two hosts perform each episode as if one were God and the other the devil. Satan stays in character by using terrible language, discussing all things sexual, and recording his voice at a lowed pitch to achieve an evil sound. The Lord has a harder time staying in character. He constantly apologizes to Satan, does not stand up for “righteous” principles as often as he should, and has a nasally if echoing voice. While the two do banter and often disagree, the good versus bad angle could really be played up when discussing recent movies.

Episode 100 Summary
Episode 100 is a summary of what happened when recording live on uStream. The account includes what we had planned for the live event versus what happened. Daniel covers the mistakes made.

- It would have been better to use uStream Producer Pro versus setting up to separate Mac computers together under one account.
- When finally the video was working the audio mysteriously went out.
- Had to interact live via chat only.
The most important lesson was how much fun interacting live with your listeners can be. We want to thank all for participating. Let this account server as a reminder how valuable the community in “podcast community” really is.

Chicken Fried Radio?
Category: Comedy
Christian, TE, Ryan, and Abbey are the “jackasses with microphones” in this explicit comedy podcast. A theme is set for each show, and hosts discuss their lives, politics, and stories gathered by the group in Delicious about the topic. There are a number of regular segments and inside jokes. The hosts have nice radio voices and are entertaining and humorous (when the show doesn’t go on too long). We liked the CFR Idol show and the crazy lists they find online to discuss. They’ve been putting this show together long enough to understand their audience as well as their strengths. Weaknesses include varying sound quality and inconsistent production. This is a good show for a laugh if one is not easily offended.

Double Cross
Category: Games and Hobbies
“As long as you can convince your opponents that you know the answer, then your incorrect answer could make you a champion.” Double Cross is game show in audio format. Host Alex Davis asks contestants questions in specific categories. Trivia covers a very broad spectrum of topics. Points are earned by answering correctly as well as by “double crossing” ones opponents by giving a wrong answer but convincing opponents that it is correct. The one with the most points at the end of the game wins. Winners from episodes throughout this season recently competed against one another, and a Double Cross champion was named. The champ was giving money for his win, which is uncommon but really nice in the podcasting world. Double Cross is a unique idea and has potential. While the premise of the game was difficult to grasp at first, we applaud Alex for his creativity in creating this audio game show. More concise explanation of the rules and a few examples would help first time listeners understand the game quicker. The audio quality is its greatest debilitation. It is challenging to produce a stellar audio production when three contestants are calling in from different locations. However it still needs attention. We recommend, as always, the Levelator from The Conversations Network.

The Rewind Podcast
Category: Music
Host Richard brings “music from new and unsigned artists” to listeners in the podcast. The first half of each episode is full of music, usually four or five songs, and the sound quality is good. Songs are by bands from all over the world. The second half is an interview of a musician, and it is here that the sound quality needs help. Music, like all art, is subjective, but listeners who enjoy Alternative/Rock music will probably like this show. Individuals interested in starting a band can also benefit from listening. Richard does a segment called “Rewind’s Guide to Becoming a Rock Star.” These segments cover everything from the equipment needed and good practice locations to ways to record. This is a nicely structured show that needs some work on sound quality. Richard is aware of this and has recently upgraded his microphone to help.

Cinefantastique Online
Category: TV and Film
Dan, Steve, and Larry are the enthusiastic hosts of this weekly Horror, Fantasy, and Sci-Fi podcast. Episodes include reviews of well known, and obscure films along with interviews and relevant news. The hosts are well spoken and have differing points-of-view when discussing acting, directing, cinematography, etc. We loved the “spoiler alerts” that give listeners the opportunity to skip ahead to a stated time in the show to avoid learning too much about a movie. Sound quality is the biggest downfall of this show. Skype connections cause hosts’ voices to fade in and out, and these glitches are not edited. The hosts are very credible and have a lot to offer, especially once the show in enhanced.

Reel Pour
Category: TV and Film
Reel Pour is a great name for a podcast with hosts who review movies and wine. Andrew, Steve, and Jason are knowledgeable about both topics and try to link the wine in review to the movie being discussed. Sometimes the “link” is simply the shape of the bottle, its name, or its label. The hosts are laid back and divide their time nicely between the wine and movie reviews. The segway from movie to wine discussion was not usually smooth however. At times it was difficult to catch the transition. Despite this, we enjoyed the deep film analysis and learning about wine making.

The Colin and Matt Show
Category: Comedy
Colin and Matt are the British comedy duo who discuss a wide range of topics through funny segments such as “Chet and Carl’s Guide to. . .,” quizzes, and the Top 5. We loved the episode theme-based segment “What would (fill in the blank) do if (fill in the situation).” For example, “What would Mr. T do if asked to plan a bachelor party.” The hosts are creative, witty, and fast paced. They are experts at satire, enthusiastic and extremely funny. The production and sound quality of this show is near that of professionally produced podcasts. We would highly recommend checking out this podcast.
