Entry Three

Phone Different Podcast

This show discusses iPhone and related topics. The hosts discuss news and rumors floating on the Web. One thing to note is that they reported something that a professional reported as false. The hosts are low-key and not very energetic; almost monotone. They seem somewhat hesitant and a little unprepared for the show. They record in stereo so that each one host comes from the left speaker and the other from the right. The audio itself is fairly decent with some minor issues.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

History Podcast

This podcast deals with anything found in history. The host does not appear to be very knowledgeable on the topics covered in the show. One review states that he reported inaccuracies. He also continually mispronounces words. Sources are cited, but most of the time it seems that he is reading them directly. The audio is decent, but the presentation needs some work. The host is very monotone, and it sounds like he is reading the entire time.

Rating: ★½☆☆☆

Lullabot

Lullabot’s team offers education, architecture, and guidance through public and private training and consulting. Lullabot is a podcast that demonstrates the difficult in rating a show. The podcast is more informative vs. having entertainment value. The hosts and their guest are knowledgably in their understanding of Drupul. The audio quality and levels for each person were consistent and well normalized. Where Lullabot gets points off is in the category of “Presentation and Delivery”. The show does not employ any type of audio transitions or bumpers to help break the show into more manageable pieces. This made the podcast drag at times.

Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 2: Retro MacCast, Tips for Entrepreneurs, Mysterious Universe

RetroMacCast

Hosted by James and John, this is a weekly show dedicated to the collecting of vintage Apple computers. The hosts are very knowledgeable, and each owns an extensive collection of Apple products. The Retro MacCast is well organized into specific sections and follows a standard format each week with occasional special edition episodes. It is only released in enhanced AAC format with chapters and a lot of changing artwork. The presentation needs some improvement as the hosts lack much tone variation and the shows can border on being lengthy. The sound quality, while not exceptional, is decent, even good.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Tips for Entrepreneurs

The Sloan brothers offer the podcast as an enabler for new and existing entrepreneurs. The hosts are very dynamic and bring relevant content that hits the intended target market. Interviewees presented on the show bring a professional manner that compliments the show. Transitions are expertly delivered and timing is precise. However, subtle compression artifacts that enhance the pronunciation of S’s were the only factors that kept Tips for Entrepreneurs from receiving a perfect 5. We cannot help but strongly recommend Tips for Entrepreneurs.

Rating: ★★★★½

Mysterious Universe

The blog and podcast cover a diverse range of topics from the paranormal and the UFO phenomenon, to cryptology and ancient mysteries. Benjamin Grundy is the host. We had a difficult time turning off this show. The topics are presented in a unique and stylized format that is topped off with the witty hosts. Sound fidelity and transition bumpers are well placed giving Mysterious Universe a pleasing pace. The only complaint we have, which is minor, is the opening music goes on too long and the volume too high that it takes away from Benjamin’s vocals. T.P.S. will continue to come back for more content and recommends others do the same.

Entry:One

The Linux Action Show:

This is a weekly podcast that covers the world of Linux and Open Source. The hosts provide a lot of energy and enthusiasm. At times either hosts will get lost on their tangents which can lose some listeners. However, the balance from one another will usually keep this from occurring too much. The Linux Action Show is serving a much needed niche in it’s focus on Linux news and distributions. The sound fidelity is consistent and pleasing however the show could use some new sound bumpers between each transition.

Rating: ★★★½☆

Coolness Roundup

This show is fun and easy to listen to. The hosts discuss technical gadgets and make things simple for people not as tech-savvy. Their voices are well-trained, and they know about which they speak. On the technical side, the show is very well done with minor blemishes in the sound. There is a slight distortion and a strong hiss in the background.

Rating: ★★★★☆

The MacCore

This show covers Apple-related news. The hosts are well-informed. They also rant quite a bit and seemingly counter themselves sometimes. The show lacks smooth transitions. Technically, the sound is not bad, although the microphone could use a pop-filter. It is conveniently released in an enhanced AAC version divided into chapters with artwork, and episodes get a good description. We rate The MacCore two-and-a-half-out-of-five stars.
