The Absolute Peach

Category: Comedy

Joe Gallagher and Ben Young are the British hosts of this comedic podcast. These two banter back and forth about events in their lives as well as odd news stories from around the world. There are a variety of humor elements employed in the show such as satire and “play on words.” They use musical fillers and sound effects to add to the show’s humor. The first 30 minutes of each episode are very entertaining. After that, however, appeal is lost (particularly on the episodes that last an hour). It is also extremely difficult for these two to stay on track with one line of thinking. These diversions are a source of their humor, but do get old after a while. Additionally, Joe tends to mumble, but Ben is quick to remind him to speak up. The Absolute Peach is an unusual name for a unique podcast that will surely entertain listeners who are appreciative of the style.

Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 31: The Indy-Cast, The Electric Head, and Katia & Kyliemac (Original Version)

The Indy-Cast

Category: TV and Film

If adventure has a name, it must be Indiana Jones. The Indy Cast, an integral part of theforce.net, is all about said character. Ed Dolista is an enthusiastic host and is transparent about his love for all things Indiana Jones. The audio inserts taken from clips from the movies (including the theme of Indiana Jones) gives authenticity to the podcast. This show began before the first trailer was released for The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and has carried all the hype with it. The podcast is packed with news from listeners and an efficient aggregation of data. Related toys, video games, and books are all discussed. A trivia question is also posed and answered the following week. Because typical production value was great, it was disappointing to listen to Ed’s interviews of guests not present in the studio. The audio abruptly switched to the host in one channel and the guest occupying the second. This lead to a competition for listeners’ attention and is extremely problematic if a listener is listening with only one ear bud. Overall, The Indy Cast takes listeners through an exciting adventure. Ed plans to continue this show as long as people continue to listen; judging by all the Indy fans out there, that will be quite some time.

Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 30: Diabetic in Candyland, Buzz Out Loud, Today in iPhone Podcast

Diabetic in Candyland

Category: Comedy

Anthony Elmore hosts this show about “winning at losing and failing successfully.” The title of the podcast is very appropriate because we all live in a tempting world that gets us into trouble sometimes. The show is relatively new. Initially it seemed that Anthony would tell his own life stories as well as those submitted by listeners. The original concept for Diabetic in Candyland was unique and appealing. However, the show format and content are constantly changing, and this is difficult for a listening audience. Anthony has employing the use of TalkShoe twice. TalkShoe allows a podcast to broadcast live, and allows a show to be interactive with an audience. Diabetic in Candyland changed the time the last live show began thereby losing the potential audience that may have been planning to interact. Another oversight Diabetic in Candyland may not be aware of is the incredibly large size of the audio bit rate. These shows are published in 192 kps resulting in files the size of 51 MB to 72 MB. A common bit rate for podcasts is 96 kps or even 64 kps. With more episodes, Anthony’s listener base will build and more people will submit their own stories for content. Limiting episodes to 30 minutes and improving production quality will also help the listener base to grow.

Buzz Out Loud

Category: Tech News

Tom, Molly, and Jason present the latest tech news in a professional yet entertaining manner. This group has put together over 735 episodes! Tom Merritt is the anchor for Buzz Out Loud, providing stability and entertainment. Molly Wood brings of a variety of talents including professionalism, wit, and intelligence. Jason Howell plays well off Tom and Molly, thus sparking many debates while rounding out the team. They cover a number of tech topics, all in about thirty minutes. Listeners will be privy to cast arguments and debates with a touch of playful banter. The chemistry between the hosts is a marvel. The podcast is recorded every weekday but is never-the-less presented in a fresh manner. Recently, CBS bought CNET, the company providing Buzz Out Loud. We hope CBS is not foolish enough to tamper with Buzz Out Loud. There are hundreds of podcast that do a good job reporting the latest in Tech. However, Buzz Out Loud, with such colorful and unique hosts, surpasses them all. Listening is so much fun that Buzz Out Loud has received our first five star rating after reviewing nearly a hundred podcasts.

Today in iPhone Podcast

Category: Gadgets

This is your place for any and all iPhone news. Host Rob must have some kind of insider’s scoop because he can answer any question thrown at him. Rob has a large listener base who ask a number of questions that he answers on each episode. He also has drawings for give-a-ways. For us, listening to this podcast simply made not having an iPhone more difficult. We are jealous and would love to own an iPhone ourselves. Today in iPhone Podcast is very informative and appeals to an international audience as opposed to the United States specifically. Rob is not afraid to call-out web sites that report on rumors about the iPhone without having the facts. However, we could not help but notice Rob, in full disclosure, admittedly doing the same. When the show began, new content was coming out once to twice a week. However as of January of this year new content has slowed to once a month. In recent shows Rob sounds very tired and his enthusiasm seems to be wavering except for little quips between himself and Scott Borne, who also hosts a podcast about the iPhone. Today in iPhone Podcast has a lot of information and tips that will assist users in maximizing their enjoyment of this revolutionary device.

Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 29: Buncocky Cast, Universe of Luxury, The Podcasting Underground

Buncocky Cast

Category: Comedy

First off, listeners should be aware of the Explicit Tag for Buncocky Cast. Sexually explicit, offensive, derogatory, funny, and random all describe this podcast. Each episode is about an hour long and begins with hosts Jay and Mike asking each other odd questions. Anything can happen next. To their credit, the hosts include musical bumpers between segments. Past that, things are not quite so grand. Buncocky Cast wears liability like a badge of honor. The liability is found when Jay and Mike take turns bashing every one and every thing in their conversation. Jay and Mike are so busy making fun of topics that they forget the importance of being relatable to the audience. Bashing everything is not a formula for success; you have to like something. The sound quality is also terrible. Jay and Mike frequently scream into what we can only consider to be a cheap microphone without bothering to place a barrier on their sound input. This results in horrible distortion and clipping of the audio. Strange music plays in the background too, which is at times annoying. As of this writing Buncocky Cast has only fourteen episodes. We hope Jay and Mike are able to chalk previous episodes up to learning experiences and start creating content to which listeners are better able to relate.

Universe of Luxury

Category: Places + Travel

High end product news is brought to you by Mike Boudet. This 20 minute show has musical bumpers and is produced weekly. Mike uses Universe of Luxury as a specific vehicle that appeals to a very niche audience. Items only the filthy rich can afford are discussed. Prices for things like gemstone fishing lures, seat-warming toilets, and private jets are given so listeners can decide if these products are for them (or laugh if there is no way these could ever be afforded). Environment-friendly products are especially popular. Boudet seriously shares all information when many hosts would be tempted to make fun of the ways the rich choose to spend their money. We are curious to know what audiences Mike Boudet has reached and how his listeners participate. If listeners desire to know more about how the wealthy spend their money, then this unique podcast promises and delivers.

The Podcasting Underground

Category: Podcasting

The passionate Jason Van Orden hosts this show dedicated to podcasting. If you currently podcast or are interested in doing so, this show is for you. Jason brings an incredible amount of practical content pertaining to new media participants. Listener questions are answered and the latest “internet radio” news and tips are given. Jason is inventive in getting feedback from his audience while sharing what he is learning. The Podcasting Underground’s format engages its target audience in a friendly way. It is able to maintain a personal delivery without being “preachy” toward podcasters. This show is professionally produced, and each episode lasts about 30 minutes. The only flaw in The Podcasting Underground is delivering new content consistently. The show is usually bi-weekly, but one can never be sure. However, we have noticed that Jason is releasing new content more frequently as of this writing. The Podcasting Underground should be on every podcasters play list due to the high value of quality each show presents.
