Podcast Reviews: Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 48: Digital Bits Skeptic, This Browns Fan, Real Talk

****For more detail not included in the written reviews please listen to the show to find out much more.***

Digital Bits Skeptic

Category: Philosophy

Digital Bits Skeptic focuses on articles promoting skepticism and critical thinking. Its host, who wishes to remain anonymous, encourages writers to send in their articles for him to read on each episode.  Writers are paid when their articles are read.  The format of Digital Bits Skeptic is unique and was difficult to get acclimated to at first. After a couple of episodes, though, we began to understand the theme of the podcast.  A vast array of topics are covered, including politics, science, and religion.  This show certainly makes listeners think.

This Browns Fan

Category: Sports and Recreation

Rejoice! for the American football season is in full stride. Hosts Paul and Alva are dedicated Cleveland Browns fans who inform, critique, and discuss all things Browns. Paul tends to be the more aggressive and vocal of the two hosts leaving Alva to compete for exposure. If you are not a football enthusiast, this podcast is not for your ears. Each episode lasts anywhere from an hour and twenty minutes to two hours!  You’ve got to love football statistics and speculation to be entertained for the entirety; if this is you, you’ve found a home.  If you can look passed the bad grammar, the hosts do a nice job of varying their voices and being relevant.

Real Talk

Category: Comedy

The Real Deal Himself is not afraid to speak his mind. In fact, Real Talk is similar to recently reviewed America Talk Radio except from a democratic party slant. Listeners will quickly pick up on the passion The Real Deal (as the host calls himself) has about the topics discussed. The host says plenty but often speaks in generalities and is rarely specific. He admits that he does not prepare for each episode. As a result, Real Talk is repetitious and not always professional. Real Talk desperately needs audio bumpers or a transitory element to assist in varying up each episode as shows can last an hour. We could not understand how the podcast belongs in the Comedy category in iTunes; Politics sounds more accurate.

Podcast Reviews: Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 47: T4 Show, The Randy Rando Randonopolis Show, Talkshow America Show

T4 Show

Category: Technology

If listeners are looking for tech reviews, advice, and good stories, they will not be disappointed with the T4 show (“Tech Today. . .Tech Tomorrow”). As of this review, T4 has accumilated over 83 episodes and maintained a consistent schedule for new material. Host Michael Manna is very knowledgeable about all kinds of tech gadgets, but often focuses on mobile technology. He is frequently joined by guests who specialize in products being covered for an episode. Michael insists on promoting his guests and allows the individuals “to plug” or promote their products or services. He does a nice job of interviewing and lets his guests speak without interruption. We are pleased Michael has decided to offer separate RSS feeds for video and audio. Michael Manna is knowledgeable about the content presented and passionate about various consumer electronics.

The Randy Rando Randonopolis Show

Category: TV & Film

The Randy Rando Randonopolis Show is a “highly structured Ramblecast.” Hosts Adam and Dave discuss any and everything from their lives to pop culture. They have the chemistry and show format that entices listeners to respond. Most episodes have segments such as reviews, Quiz Master, Fav 5, and good news. The occasional “Airing of Grievenace” is a clever portion of the show serving as a safe place for the hosts and guests to rant, complain, and voice their frustrations about life. The show really is funny and entertaining. Adam and Dave have chosen to break their podcasts into Seasons and Episodes. The podcast celebrated its first anniversary (the end of season 1) on Episode 10 however. Because so few shows where produced in a year, we could only deduce that the first season must have endured a writer’s strike. We’d love to see these two produce episodes more frequently. Regarding sound quality, Adam and Dave appear to be sharing one microphone. Their voices dim in and out as they transition in conversation. While we enjoyed this show, the major weakness of incredibly inconsistency cannot be overlooked.

Talk Show America

Category: News & Politics

This conservative Republican-based show is hosted by the passionate J.R. The podcast can be heard on several radio stations and in podcast format. J.R. primarily discusses politics but also covers the War on Terror and global events that affect the US military. Many of his topics are things not discussed by the main-stream media. He clearly states his sources of information and also states when he is giving his opinion. Interestingly, when searching iTunes, Talk Show America does not appear. J.R. really cannot afford to miss this “800 pound gorilla.” J.R. has also chosen to include standard commercials in the adaptation of the radio show to a podcast. Certainly we are not against podcasters making money from their shows, quite the contrary. However, the radio specific commercials do not adapt well into a podcast format and take up six to eight minutes of each episode. Never-the-less, J.R. is passionate about the political topics covered and secure in his opinions shared.

Podcast Reviews: Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 47: State of The Podcast

****For more detail not included in the written reviews please listen to the show to find out much more.***

The State of “Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show.” Daniel and Jana discuss the latest changes that will be introduced in future shows.

1. Podcasts reviewed will now include two scores. Daniel and Jana will no longer average their respective scores together. Due to their preferences and unique experiences, they will include their scores separately in the recorded podcasts and on the web site.

2. Jana is going to have a baby! This opens up an opportunity for a podcaster looking to co-host with Daniel. A co-host will only be needed for an interim time period ranging from two to six weeks. Jana’s Due Date is November 11 so a co-host will be needed at the beginning of November. Those interested in co-hosting with Daniel should email thatpodcastshow@gmail.com. Please include your name, time zone, and include samples or experience you may have.

3. iTunes is discussed in regards to the latest news from Microsoft’s Zune. Podcasts listed in iTunes rarely appear regulated. For example, many shows that stopped production in 2004 are still listed there. The same can not be said of the Zune Marketplace. In fact, Zune Podcast Programmer Lead Robert Greenley requests that podcasters contact him if they are having difficulty getting their shows in the Zune Catalog. You can get in touch with Robert via email. (rob@zune.net)

Podcast Reviews: Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 45: Cinema Diabolica, Handyguys Podcast, The Goldberg and Ricky Show

****For more detail not included in the written reviews please listen to the show to find out much more.***

Handyguys Podcast

Category: Education

Handyguys Podcast focuses on do-it-yourself home improvement topics. Likable hosts Brian and Paul offer tips every hand-man or woman need to know. They do their research and are prepared for each episode. Topics range from lawn care to grill maintenance, jig saws to closet organization.  They also answer listen questions via email and on the show at times.  We noticed Brian and Paul experimenting with the style and format of the show. Due to experimentation some episodes were more successful than others. Brian and Paul periodically had difficulty explaining how to fix or build some items using an audio format; at times a video podcast would be more effective. Overall, the Handyguys Podcast is helpful and entertaining.

Rating: ★★★½☆

Cinema Diabolica

Category: TV & Film

“Cinema Diabolica covers the best (and worst) in Horror, Giallo, Exploitation, Euro-Crime and Worldwide Cult cinema.” Earning the Explicit tag, hosts F13 and DZ shock and entertain with sharp wits, rye humor, and pro vocal talent and sound. The hosts are intelligent and extremely thoughtful with their reviews. The podcast discusses and reviews movie genres we never knew about and explores a cultish world often frowned on by mainstream media. The hosts rate movies on a scale of 1 to 10 based on artistic qualities, effects, and entertainment value. They also assign a “thumbs up” if they’d see the movie again and a “thumbs down” if one view was enough. If mainstream movies are not your “thing,” this podcast very well may be.

Rating: ★★★½☆

The Goldberg and Ricky Show

Category: TV & Film

In the spirit of anal sex and curious minds comes The Goldberg and Ricky Show, hosted, obviously, by a guy named Goldberg and one named Ricky. The Show’s website provides audiences with an idea of what to expect with quotes like “If you like politics, news, and very serious subjects go to foxnews.com and get the hell out of here!!!!” Hosts discuss their lives and some current events. Questions are also debated such as whether or not two men kissing in order to get a chick is gay. The explicit tag is fully earned based on language and content. Thus those interested in tales of societal sexual taboos may find entertainment by listening. On a different note, The Goldberg and Ricky Show releases new content inconsistently. Episodes have been released weekly, every 3 weeks, and even two on the same day.

Podcast Reviews: Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 44: Spider-Man Crawl Space Podcast, Batman Universe Podcast, Starkville’s House of El

****For more detail not included in the written reviews please listen to the show to find out much more.***

Batman Universe Podcast

Category: TV & Film

All things Batman-related are up for discussion in this podcast; this includes movies, animation, cartoons, TV series and comic books. We have rarely seen a podcast sink so deeply into its content. Interviews have also been done. Founding host Dustin is joined by Chris, Apple, and Carl for many of the episodes. Episode lengths vary greatly from 30 minutes to an hour and a half. A good amount of time is spent in post-production with the addition of bumpers, which are usually movie clips. At times there are too many of these clips, and they detract from the show. The podcast has been mostly consistent in the release of content except for a drop off in August. However, the team is starting strong with a new episode in September. Unfortunately, our enthusiasm for this show fell apart in regards to the audio production. Dustin’s treble level was so high that it made his “P’s” and “T’s” bursting plosives. For more pleasing sound quality, time should also be spent in post production on this issue.

Rating: ★★½☆☆

Starkville’s House of El (SHoE)

Category: TV & Film

Derek Russell and Steve Glosson host this podcast dedicated to the TV show Smallville. Smallville covers Clark Kent’s life as a teenager as he discovers his superpowers. Smallville is about to begin its 8th season so the hosts have had a lot of material to cover; consequently there are close to 100 episodes of this podcast. Episodes last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Many of ShoE’s shows follow new Smallville episode releases so the podcast generally consists of discussion about these episodes as well as listener emails. Since this show is mostly discussion based, bumpers to break up the episodes would be a nice addition. Video podcasting has also been employed to cover gatherings such as the recent Dragon Con in Atlanta, Georgia. We are amazed at the variety and quantity of content.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Spider-Man Crawl Space Podcast

Category: TV & Film

Everyone’s favorite “Spiderman” is the inspiration for Spider-Man Crawl Space Podcast. From the comics, cartoons, and feature films, the world of Spiderman is studied and explored. While all things Spidey are covered in this show, most of the discussion revolves around comic books. Host Brad Douglas and friends do a great job of keeping each episode entertaining and moving along. The podcast has quite a following, and a major portion of each episode is spent on listener questions and comments. Spidey fans can expect to hear from the artist and writers that have been influential in the Spiderman Universe. As with the other “Super Hero” podcasts, the length of each episode varies greatly from 20 minutes to an hour or more. It should also be noted that the language in this podcast is not for the kiddies; this is definitely for your more mature Spidey fans. New content is semi-consistent but gaps are noticeable. Overall, this podcast is a lot of fun.
