Wine for Newbies

Category: Food

Wine for Newbies is a guide for listeners interested in learning about the art of wine. Host William Wilson is well-informed and well-spoken. He knows a lot about wine yet still presents himself as unpretentious and helpful to people who are interested in learning. While not especially entertaining, Bill does a good job of being relatable and getting the information across clearly and effectively. He informs listeners about the various types of wine along with vintage and vineyard. Many episodes include tips about the proper wine for the appropriate occasion. This podcast is most useful when listened to chronologically from the first episode as it teaches the basics of wine in the first several shows. Unfortunately, these episodes are listed out of order on the iTunes page, which may make it difficult for “newbies” to get the information in the proper order. Wine for Newbies is comfortable in length and style. It is a great resource for those interested in learning more about wine.

D6 Generation

Category: Games

The D6 Generation is a podcast for people interested in war games, board games, and RPG’s and is released every two weeks. D6G includes segments like “Achievements in Gaming”, news, game reviews, and “When the Wives Attack,” which gives the female perspective on gaming. The hosts’ female counter parts sound just as fun and relaxed as their husbands. Possible spin off? Hosts Russ, Craig, and Raef have great personalities, keep the show fun and entertaining, and seem very well informed, lending credibility to their reviews. On the down side, the hosts are often too close to the microphones which causes audio clipping and discomfort for listeners. Also, the length of many episodes exceeds three hours, which may be a deterrent for all but the most hardcore gamers. Never-the-less, D6 Generation podcast is a winner of a show despite the mentioned complaints.

Planned Brotherhood

Category: Comedy

Planned Brotherhood is a highly explicit but entertaining podcast. Brothers Nick and P.J. sit down for an hour and discuss random topics that occur in their lives. The podcast is completely unstructured and full of “stream of consciousness” discussions. They have good chemistry and story-telling ability. The transitional elements employed place an extra coat of polish on the show’s format. Also, the show is very consistent with the release of new episodes every week. On several episodes, however, the audio levels were too loud or too soft. Additionally, this show could be improved with some structure and the addition of some fun and creative segments.

Podcast Reviews: Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 55: The Office Alliance-That’s What She Said-Cue The Film

****For more detail not included in the written reviews please listen to the show to find out much more.***

The Office Alliance Podcast

Category: TV and Film

Melody, Sarah, and Kimberly are hosts of The Office Alliance Podcast. The weekly podcast is dedicated to discussing the intricacies that make the comedic television series “The Office” so successful. In each episode, the hosts discuss the latest episode, share their favorite moments and theories, and announce the latest news about The Office and The Office Fandom . They make great use of transitional elements, such as music and short clips from the show, to keep episodes moving along. They put out new podcast episodes when The Office has new episodes, but are less consistent during summer hiatus and during last season’s writers’ strike. The audio quality is usually fairly good, but some shows have an echo that comes from not properly syncing multiple tracks or using microphones that don’t effectively reduce noise. Overall this is a great show for any fan of The Office.

That’s What She Said: The Office

Category: TV and Film

That’s What She Said is the long-running podcast about the NBC hit TV series “The Office.” Matt Sommer and Kevin Crossman are the well-spoken and clever hosts who provide the commentary and news relating to upcoming episodes and announcements regarding the cast. TWSS, the abbreviated name used by the podcast, offers strong opinions about the direction of “The Office” while providing a play-by-play of the most recent episode. We enjoyed the audio clips used to better emphasize the aspects of the related episode as well as the excellent audio quality. TWSS has a good formula for the show with sections such as Water Cooler, Clips, Plot Lines, Deleted Scenes, and Films. This is another great show for Office fans which could only be improved with a little more consistency.

Cue the Film

Category: TV and Film

Cue the Film is a movie review podcast that, on a standard episode, reviews a few movies based on a common theme. They also release special episodes called “Splices” in which one or more hosts will go in depth on a particular movie or movie series. Unfortunately, the hosts have a difficult time staying on topic. The show also suffers in the two major areas of audio quality and editing. Better microphones and more time spent editing out the long pauses and recording issues would go a long way towards improving the show. This would really allow the hosts’ charming personalities to shine through and make this live podcast head-and-shoulders above most.

Podcast Reviews: Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 54: Real Talk-MetroBuzz-My Living Room

Real Talk

Category: Comedy

Real Talk is an unstructured conversation between a group of friends, featuring shockingly honest discussion about their lives, including sex, drugs, childhood, and adolescent mistakes. Hosts Nick and Dan are humorous and relatable, and they frequently have guests who join in the conversations. Even when they are talking to mutual acquaintances unknown to the listener, the stories remain interesting. Sue thoroughly enjoyed Nick, whom she found to be incredibly self-aware and open to full-disclosure. We do suggest the hosts remember to introduce themselves and guests in each episode. Also, some episodes have questionable audio, specifically Episode 002, in which one of the hosts was using a very poor microphone. Additionally, this show was difficult to find due to possible multiple feeds of episodes.

MetroBuzz

Category: Comedy

Metrobuzz has an incredibly large online community and a dedicated following. No doubt this led to MetroBuzz being nominated for “Best Comedy” in the 2008 Podcast Awards. Its hosts, John and Colleen, discuss all aspects of pop culture with lots of fun segments including Urban Dictionary, Spotlight, Top 5, and American Idol for the Idol American among others. They use lots of music and audio clips to keep the show upbeat and interesting and occasionally throw in original, creative sketches that keep the show consistently funny. Impressively from a technical and organizational standpoint, MetroBuzz has included ten or more guests on Skype at one time. This displays a rare talent in editing and technical know-how. Aside from the occasional rant and sounding scripted at times, Metrobuzz is an excellent pop culture podcast that is pumped full of energy and humor.

My Living Room! Radio Show Podcast

Category: Music

My Living Room! Radio is a music podcast that invites listeners into host Cheryl Hoar’s “living room” to hear her favorite playlists. It brings an energetic medley of electronica and alternative music in which each track is unique and interesting, blending perfectly with the next. The audio quality is excellent, especially for a music podcast, and as listeners, we felt completely immersed in the music. This show is unique when compared to other music podcasts because of the occasional interview Cheryl has with well known or up-and-coming musicians. Unfortunately, Cheryl doesn’t include any information about the songs included in each episode. If a listener enjoys a particular song, he has to go online to find out what it is. Overall, this is a great music podcast and highly recommended for anyone interested in new music, especially electronica.

Podcast Reviews: Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 53: Roadcast Radio-Cruising Authority-The Kitchen Sink

****For more detail not included in the written reviews please listen to the show to find out much more.***

Roadcast Radio

Category: Comedy

Roadcast Radio is a show by a group of guys who share stories, talk about pop culture, and “rip on” each other. The podcast is dedicated to comedic stories surrounding the hosts’ lives. Listeners need to be aware of the Explicit tag. The cast talk about sex a lot and some may find the things said to be very offensive. The hosts keep the show moving with music, audio clips, and funny quotes. The podcast employs the use of Gcast, which is a service that allows recording via a toll-free call from any phone. Using Gcast places the Roadcast Radio audio quality at a disadvantage. The length of the show is too long too thus jeopardizing the listening experience. Roadcast Radio can be entertaining, and the hosts have interesting personalties. Check them out if you’re not easily offended.

Cruising Authority

Category: Places and Travel

Host Barry Vaudrin is advertised as America’s cruise director and the doctor of cruising. For the most part, he delivers with this show. Cruising Authority informs listeners about the cruise industry and what happens behind the scenes. Barry is a comfortable, informed host who clearly displays avid interest in the industry which makes him a skilled speaker on the subject. He also has good interviewing skills, and all of the interviews we heard have been relevant, informative, and easy to understand. Barry does an exceptional job of bringing the listener into the cruise experience with music, sounds of the ocean, and interviews with crew members and others on the ships. In fact, the recordings are so well produced that listeners will feel like they are on board a luxury cruise liner. Barry can be repetitive in getting his points across, but this can easily be remedied by a little extra editing in post-production. Also, some of the shows seem to run a bit longer than is necessary for this type of content. The biggest problem? That he’s experiencing all these fantastic cruises and we are not!

The Kitchen Sink

Category: Music

The Kitchen Sink is a music podcast that is essentially a re-broadcast of a radio show in which host Chris Floyd plays all different genres of music, usually tied in with a common theme. The listed music genres are Rock, Soul, Blues, Country, Rockabilly, Local & Indie, Punk, Hip-Hop, and strange movie audio clips. Chris mixes this music old-school d.j. style. Chris claims that The Kitchen Sink is a show for people who like all music, but we were disappointed to find that most of the songs featured sounded similar. Musical-dependent podcasts need to have higher than average sound quality when compared to a vocal-based show. The Kitchen Sink does not offer the fidelity needed for an all music-based show. In fact, listening to this show was akin to listening to an AM station. Chris is a fairly good host and comes across as professional, although he does sound a bit generic at times. If you enjoy music podcasts and don’t mind listening to music that others choose for you, you may enjoy this podcast for its fun themes.
