Arbitrary Talk

Category: Philosophy

The definition of arbitrary is “to be determined by chance, whim, or impulse, and not by necessity, reason, or principle.” This podcast is adeptly named. Hosts Rich, Asava, and Stibs answer random questions submitted by listeners. Listeners can also answer the questions sent in for future episodes. Arbitrary Talk has a fun and relaxed environment while being creatively informative. We particularly liked the episode that was “sponsored.” The hosts will say anything (within reason) throughout a show if sponsored to do so. Arbitrary Talk can become more memorable by coming up with even more creative ways to present their content.

Berton Beatle Bonanza

Category: Music

The podcast includes rare Beatles tracks, trivia, reviews and goes to great lengths to tell the story behind the songs being played. The host interprets many songs by explaining how they related to a time in history while dispelling the historic and current rumors surrounding the Beatles. There is little information we can provide about the podcast because there is not an introduction or explanation for the purpose of the show. Also, in episodes to which we listened, the host never provided his name or other vital information. Berton Beatle Bonanza offers little for the listener due to the lack of standard information, poor sound quality, and need for more editing.

Living Word Christian Astrology Podcast

Category: Religion and Spirituality

Living Word Christian Astrology Podcast is a 3-5 minute daily podcast that combines the current astrological transits with a conventional Christian devotional reading. The enthusiastic host Ryven has recently introduced an extended edition of the podcast that runs each week for about 50 minutes. We highly recommend listeners direct their attention first to the extended version first released March 16, 2009. Listeners need to be familiar with astrology and terms commonly associated with the study. Living Word Christian Astrology Podcast certainly has original subject matter. Ryvan has us interested and curious about where he plans to take the podcast next.

Historyzine

Category: History

This is an exploratory history podcast that shares the fun and adventure of discovering history through the use of good storytelling. Episodes include history podcast and book reviews along with the history behind certain words we use in modern language. The host, Jim, has a clean and concise English accent that is a terrific match with his persona. Historyzine has increased the amount of ambient effects that add to the story-telling element to the show as well. Jim does a tremendous amount of research for each episode and is sure to state his sources. A weakness of Historyzine is the lack of publishing new content with consistency. Sometimes there are months between new episode releases on the RSS feed. With all this said, we encourage history lovers and those interested in learning about history in an entertaining way to check out Historyzine.

The Basil Bottler Show

Category: Comedy

As the podcast title suggests, Basil Bottler hosts this show full of random discussions about his personal need to meet girls, bits of music, and the latest news regarding his rocket ship (which will be manure-powered). Listening to The Basil Bottler Show is a unique experience and, at times, quite depressing. It is possible that Basil’s show is a form of British humor that is simply lost on us. While the show is of good length, Basil is inconsistent in releasing new episodes. There also does not appear to be a great deal of improvement in show quality despite the fact that there are numerous episodes. Basil does ask for ways to better promote “The Basil Bottler Show” so we have some basic suggestions. These include the use of services such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace to their breaking points. Also, many hosts have found commenting on other podcasts along with interacting with message boards and other new media forums to be very helpful in promoting their shows.

Podcast in your Face

Category: Comedy

To begin with, “Podcast in your Face” is a great name. Hosts Rick and Nick discuss topics such as music, films, and pop culture. Their personalities “mesh” really well, and this results in a very entertaining show. Podcast in your Face has also drastically improved the style and energy of the show since early episodes. Rick and Nick interview interesting and many times very funny guests which gives them an opportunity to display their solid interviewing skills. In each episode, the hosts give their “Song of the Day” or ask their guest for his/her “Song of the Day.” They then proceed to play an insert of the song for listeners. This is a great way for listeners to discover new music they may enjoy. Podcast in your Face is consistent in producing new material as well as in a nice show length. We recommend checking this one out.

Basement Boyz Podcast

Category: Comedy

Ward Falk, Josh Childers, and a long list of guests are the hosts for Basement Boyz. In this laid-back podcast, listeners hear about a variety of circumstances that affect the Basement Boyz. They range from difficulty in relationships to what life is like in a band. Just to add a bit of variety, it is not uncommon for the group to place random phone calls through Skype to get a reaction from the person who answers. While Basement Boyz podcast is consistent in releasing new episodes, there are missing pieces that hinder the show from reaching its full potential. The lack of organization and segments take away from the comedic purpose. The success of many comedic podcasts results from the ability to walk the fine line between careful planning and an affinity for a sharp wit. The hosts have the quick wit but lack the organization.

The Children’s Hour of Knowledge

Category: Comedy

Profoctor Davey, Bongo McTweedlepants and other Puppet Pals are voiced by Stephen Heintz and Brendan Adkins in this podcast that has a stereotypical children’s show format. Within the first minute or so, listeners hear the comedic elements that separate this show from likes of The Muppets and Sesame Street. The Children’s Hour of Knowledge is not an hour in length and is for all ages, except under 18 years. Stephen and Brendan are talented writers with solid comedic timing. Children-like sound effects, jingles, and music add an additional coat of enjoyable thematics. The satire is also evident in the “Mail Bag” segment that includes question with a more adult theme, such as pornography, smoking, or drugs. This show is extremely unique and equally as funny. Check this one out for a good laugh.

The Chronic Rift

Category: TV and Film

Host John and his panel of “regulars” discuss the latest in science fiction, fantasy, horror, and comic art in this podcast. The Chronic Rift is based on the New York public access show from the 1990’s. Included in the list of episodes are “The Chronic Rift Quickies” which are thirty minute episodes as opposed to the normal hour or longer shows. The entertainment value of The Chronic Rift is very dependent upon the subject material being discussed. Topics vary from live action role-playing games to celebrating Mystery Science Theater’s recent anniversary. Excellent use is made of sound clips from popular shows of these genres as well. The Chronic Rift is a young podcast which is evident in the poor sound levels and hosts talking over one another. Regular segments are not yet a part of the show, and we believe these would help to differentiate The Chronic Rift from other related podcasts.
