Long Distance Relationship

Category: Music

Long Distance Relationship is a weekly conversation between two friends. One is a married man from Washington, and the other is his best friend and partying bachelor from San Francisco. Movies, music, sports, comic books, and their lives are the usual topics of conversation. Occasionally, music and sound effects are inserted. The intro song is creative and funny. Basically, listening to Long Distance Relationship is like listening passively to a phone call between two friends. After listening to several episodes, a vital question became apparent: What’s in it for the listeners of this podcast? Attempts must be made to reach out to listeners and provide a participatory environment for people to be interested in the show. Our final recommendation is to consolidate the length of the episodes.

The Jamhole

Category: Comedy

The Jamhole is a podcast led by hosts Mat and Danni. Former host Brayden was in the first vast selection of episodes, but Danni has since taken over. The podcast is well promoted and features live interactive elements in the form of a chat-room. The hosts listen to and support other podcasts as well. The Jamhole is incredibly consistent and publishes new episodes at a break-neck pace. With all this said, we were overwhelmed by the sometimes two-hour long episodes. The length of episodes was not the only surprise. The content discussed is of a demented and depraved nature. Shows were littered with an excessive amount of harsh language and nauseating material. We simply could not get passed the content.

The Ceiling Fan

Category: Comedy

The Ceiling Fan is an “Adventures In Odyssey” fan podcast. “Adventures in Odyssey” is a popular Christian-themed radio show for kids created by Focus on the Family. This fan podcast is unique because the host, Ethan Daniels, is actually a character himself. The voice behind “Ethan” is Kevin McCreary. Ethan discusses news and voice actors from Odyssey. Kevin sometimes plays himself on the show, and is a great voice actor is his own right. The sound production including vocals, sound effects, and ambient noise is incredibly professional. The Ceiling Fan also manages to provide a convincing environment and give character-driven playful stories. This was a fun one to which to listen.

Edgy Podcast Reviews 77: Paleo-Cinema Podcast-Better In The Dark-Masters of None

Paleo-Cinema Podcast

Category: TV and Film

Paleo-Cinema Podcast is a look into movie-past. Specifically, the show covers films from 1895-1980 in genres such as horror, cult movies, classic films and more. Occasionally, host Terry Frost will include episodes dedicated to the musical scores that bring life to the screen. Listeners receive a plethora of information regarding casting, set designs, and film location from listening to Paleo-Cinema Podcast. At times it is difficult to digest the content because Terry’s voice tends to be monotonous. However, in recent episodes Terry has grown more transparent with his personality. In summary, Paleo-Cinema Podcast has a wealth of educational value but struggles with the entertainment appeal.

Better In The Dark

Category: TV and Film

Better In The Dark offers an interesting combination of hosting styles from Derrick and Thomas as they discuss movies and sometimes comics. We enjoyed the banter between hosts and the information discussed. Both guys are funny and witty. There are many distractions that keep the podcast from standing out however. First, we could not find the correct RSS feed to download the episodes either in iTunes or at the Better In The Dark homepage. We had to contact Better In The Dark directly. Also, the sound quality is “rough.” Derrick and Tom seem to be sharing one microphone which results in the hosts either being too close or too far away from the mic. It is also evident that episodes are edited heavily, which we normally applaud. However, we recommend leaving some space between sentences to provide for a more natural flow of conversation. Finally, we encourage shorter show lengths, particularly for those over two hours. The commitment required to listen to such lengthy episodes is too much for most listeners.

Masters of None

Category: Society and Culture

Masters of None attempts to answer questions such as: Who is the Greatest Movie Character of All Time?, What are the Worst Songs To Get a Lap Dance To?, and Who is better: Biggie or Tupac?. Masters of None is a hilarious show. In addition to having great radio voices, hosts Mike, Jay, and Art provide a fun and playful environment. Much of the podcast is based around segments such as “Debates,” “Worst to First,” and “Top Ten Listings” for every category imaginable. We loved the randomness of show topics. Here are a few more examples: top gaming console of all time and the worst band names ever. Daniel felt Master of None became too offensive at times, but the hosts clearly give this warning in the show summary. Surprisingly, Jana liked the show so much, she didn’t mind the long episode lengths.

Edgy Podcast Reviews 76: Walk To Run Records-Just My Show-The Man Hour

Walk To Run Records

Category: Music

As residents of the ATL, the goal of the hosts from Walk To Run Records is to “bring attention to Atlanta musicians.” However, this musically-focused podcast not only plays music from many local bands, it also plays music from bands around the country. A new episode is released monthly, and the sound production is excellent. The audio file size is hefty but understandable given the musical content provided. Host Tracy is mellow and melancholy at times which frequently fits the music selection offered. Fellow host Travis appears to be along for the ride and generally does not add much musical insight to the podcast. We felt that the bantering between Tracy and Travis fall flat resulting in poor chemistry between the hosts. As a result, the music content must stand alone for Walk To Run Records to be a resource for music enthusiasts. Take a listen to find out if the music stands alone for you.

Just My Show

Category: Arts

Just My Show is a retro pop culture podcast that has been releasing new content since its conception in January 2006. Listeners can expect interviews from celebrities affiliated with classic television, movies, sports, and inventions. Eric is an amiable hosts who is transparent and thus relatable. By listening to the first episode through the most recent, we found that the format and production of Just My Show has not deviated much for its original format. Usually, this is suicidal for podcasts, however, in this instance, the lack of deviation is attributed to Eric’s professionalism and deep understanding of his genre before starting his show. Eric is very conscious about perfecting his interviewing abilities by asking unique questions to acquire more personal answers. If you lived through the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and/or 90’s, this show is you!

The Man Hour

Category: Society and Culture

The Man Hour is advertised as “two comedians-one show” with interviews from actors, musicians, fighters and comedians. Hosts Jose and Mike are the two comedians but did not usually strike us as funny. A common discussion featured in The Man Hour is UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Independent music is randomly played as well. The Man Hour is unorganized, but some audiences may respond favorably to this style. However, what may turn new listeners off is the sound production of the podcast. The Man Hour is recorded via Blog Talk Radio which
results in ear-crippling audio that makes the dialogue and music difficult to interpret. We took a close look at the encoding setting which can make a difference in the quality of audio being heard. The mp3 file was set to a low 32 kps. This low of a setting can be helpful in reducing the size of the audio file, however, this setting is too low for The Man Hour especially with the content quality already compromised. We suggest The Man Hour record their audio to a separate track or recording device. Also, it is vital to remove excessive silence or awkward pauses in an episode.
