Dogear Nation

Category: Technology

Dogear Nation podcasts your TAGS. Hosts Michael Rowe, Michael Martine, and Andy Piper offers their opinions on the latest technology and websites that have been “tagged” by listeners. Bookmarking tags are tools that allow users to assign keywords to a web page for future reference and share with others. Participants in the podcast can tag content they would like to be discussed by adding “Dogear-Nation” as a tag. The hosts and guests are knowledgeable and offer insights to the latest in technology and gadgets. Dogear Nation is also consistent in releasing new content. However, the sound production inhibited full enjoyment of the podcast with muddled lows, hisses and other ambient noise. The hosts record in different locations, and this could be the source of the poor sound quality. Dogear Nation offers a unique service and a novel way of connecting with listeners but has a difficult time standing out against the hundreds of podcasts that offer similar content.

The Jane Ellen

Category: TV and Film

The Jane Ellen is hosted by Jane Ellen, her husband Jim Herrin, and occasionally Adam Cravins. Jane is a writer and does voice-over’s so she is familiar with the entertainment industry. The hosts discus the latest in television series and odd news stories with banter sprinkled through each episode. Jane is very opinionated and is not afraid to voice her opinions. The Jane Ellen releases new episodes Monday through Friday and is very consistent with this release schedule: an impressive feat indeed. However, The Jane Ellen falls short by not offering enough entertainment and ways for listeners to participate. These two things are needed for the podcast to stand out in the already crowded TV and Film category. We encourage the podcast to focus on ways to increase listener participation thus adding variety to the content. Ultimately, if listeners are looking for Jane Ellen’s and Jim’s opinions on the latest in show-biz news and gossip, then The Jane Ellen podcast is for you.

Superego Podcast

Category: Comedy

Superego is a comedy podcast that presents a collection of improvised radio-style sketches delivered on the first of every month. The show is hosted by Drs. Jeremy Carter and Matt Gourley. The Superego Podcast is primarily an audio podcast but does include video episodes. Jeff is focused on creating episodes that are rarely longer than twenty five minutes for those listening while commuting. The unique style the Superego Podcast employs to deliver the content is similar to that of Saturday Night Live except in audio form. Each sketch is segmented by the name of the profile being analyzed regarding self-obsession. Superego Podcast offers listeners the choice of choosing which part of the show to which to listen by an enhanced podcast format. Enhanced podcasts are able to present chapter markers in an audio file much like a DVD movie can allow users to jump to predetermined spots in a presentation. The skill of writing and suburb audio production is of the best that Edgy Podcast Reviews have ever heard. The audio is crystal clear and void of distracting artifacts. In addition, the vocal talent and crafty comedic timing is of such quality that Daniel and Jana were all too happy to present Superego Podcast two perfect scores. A feat that has not occurred for a podcast since June 6, 2008 when Buzz Out Loud received a perfect score.

Taste Like Burning

Category: Comedy

Tastes Like Burning is described as “two guys commenting about life.” In each one hour episode, hosts James and Tim give their personal stories, which often lead to tangents. Listeners are able to hear the podcast but are rarely able to participate. Other than reading the occasional listener email, little time is dedicated to “bringing in” the listener. As we have before, we ask why strangers would listen to Tastes Like Burning? James and Tim can tell stories well, but there are hundreds of other podcasts that do the same. Perhaps the one thing that does differentiate this show is that the hosts are gay. This does give the stories told a unique perspective from those told in other podcasts we have reviewed.

The Happy Hour Lounge

Category: Music

Andrew and Jeremy head up the eclectic mix of “cocktail” tunes offered by The Happy Hour Lounge. The genre of music can also be described as “the classics” such as Sinatra and Ann Margaret. The hosts have a nice balance of conversing with one another and playing music. Also, Andrew and Jeremy are skilled at keeping the mood light while informing listeners about the musicians or bands being played. The Happy Hour Lounge offers the “Drink Segment of the Week.” These alcoholic beverages are normally a speciality of mixed drinks. Detailed ingredients and directions to make the beverages are included. This show is a nice, relaxing way to spend an hour.

Cross Driven Radio

Category: Music

Cross Driven Radio is hosted by Charley Hays and targets the Christian audience in the world of podcasting. Episodes consist mostly of Christian music along with interviews of members from organizations that Charley finds interesting. Earlier episodes revealed that Cross Driven Radio was looking for its niche and target audience. More recent episodes indicate the podcast has a clearer focus and direction toward Christian music. Charley continues to tighten production including audio quality while improving the pace of the podcast. Cross Driven Radio had a rough start, but we believe it is now worth a listen for those looking for another source of Christian music.
