Serving Donuts

Category: Comedy

The “Donut Brothers,” Jim Cutler and Scott Stanley, host this unique podcast that is a high-energy, fast-paced flurry of discussion, banter, and other comedic elements. They give commentary to interesting stories in the news and have a segment called “The Serving Donuts Players, “which we really enjoyed. Both hosts are professionally involved in radio, and this is clearly evident in this podcast. Despite listening to numerous episodes, we were unable to figure out how the name of the show relates to the content, but it is catchy. The hosts are frequently joined by entertaining guests such as Dan, Isabella, The Government Guy, and Donut Boy to name a few. Serving Donuts makes good use of its guests to vary the pace of episodes, making the half-hour go quickly. New content was being released on an incredibly consistent weekly basis until Episode 43, which was released on August 25. Since this time, there has not been a word from the Donut Brothers, and this is a shame. Hopefully, Serving Donuts is merely taking a break because we found the podcast a worthy listen.

BBQ Central Radio

Category: Food

BBQ Central Radio is all about the art of BBQ’ing and grilling. This is not a podcast with a leisurely tempo because it is packed with information, give-a-ways, interviews, and call-ins. Host Greg Rempre and guests avidly discuss choosing the best quality meat, meat preparation, the use of hormones, stress free environments for cattle, and types of grain fed. Greg refers to his listeners as “Centralites,” and it seems these listeners are part of a unique niche. We were amazed at the detail and various ways to prepare quality BBQ. We also like Greg’s mom, Connie, who gives her favorite recipes on the show once a month. Listeners should be notified that BBQ Central Radio is formatted as a radio-style programming. While we are always careful to applaud podcasters who are paid for their work, BBQ Central Radio does have a high number of commercials in comparison to the length of the program. Overall, listeners who are eager to learn the art of BBQ’ing and how to base, rubs, slap, and stick meat should give BBQ Central Radio a listen.

Jimmy in the Garden

Category: Literature

Jimmy in the Garden is aptly promoted as “Comics reviews, commentary, culture, and Jimmy.” Rick, Ray, and Dr. Lou join Jimmy as hosts. At its heart, Jimmy in the Garden is a comic book-themed podcast. However, a large portion of the podcast is devoted to the antics of Jimmy, the stories he tells, and the other hosts making fun of him. Once the actual comic book discussion got started then the podcast grabbed our attention. It is obvious this podcast is using Jimmy to differentiate itself from other comic book-themed shows. However, Jimmy was more of a distraction then an enabler. We feel the presentation and quality of the discussion and reviews regarding comic books is the difference that will set this podcast apart from others. The hosts are comedic and relatable enough that we wanted to hear more of their opinions and points-of-view. Overall, Jimmy in the Garden is highly disorganized but excels at new content distribution with the once-a-month schedule. Bumpers are used along with short “bits” to keep the show moving. We would like to hear the audio leveled out further and the focus taken off ridicule of Jimmy. If you’re a comic fan, be sure to check it out for yourself.

In Episode 82, Daniel and Jana discuss their opinions about the direction of podcasting while attempting to offer solutions for the Podcast community. They discuss the lack of recent and readily available information on how to podcast. Every listener is encouraged to share his opinions and frustrations, and fellow podcasters are asked to share the ways they marketing their own podcasts. This is Edgy Podcast Review’s idea to approach this still newly blooming way to creating content as a true community.

The Hate Podcast

Category: Philosophy

A weekly podcast for the discerning hater. Hosts Mike and Cathy trudge through society’s most annoying facets while challenging themselves intellectually and morally–sometimes. The Hate Podcast features segments such as General Hate, Some Hate From the News, and What if scenarios. Episodes can feature some thought provoking ideas while others seem to lose focus. Some content is just down right nasty. We found the episodes to be too long, and that may push away possible listeners. Length can be consolidated without the loss of atmosphere or content if edited correctly.

Wild Ideas The Podcast

Category: Science and Medicine

Wild Ideas The Podcast invites listeners to join a naturalist, science educator, and conservation biologist for a weekly nature discussion. Hosts Gordon, Joann, and Gary are the voices for this simple, even gentle, podcast. Specifically, the show is gentle in presentation and delivery with sounds of nature weaved throughout each episode. The hosts are passionate about their specialties and sparks of excitement can be heard despite their usually mellow tones. A lot of information is covered such as vegetation, types of species, populations, and geographical locations. The content covered requires at least a basic understanding of nature and biology to fully appreciate the content.

A Damn Movie Podcast

Category: TV and Film

The hosts of A Damn Movie Podcast dissect movies, actors, design, and musical scores then turn their findings into well presented content for listeners. The hosts, both named Adam, differ in their opinions enough to allow for interesting and intriguing conversation. They are thoughtful and intelligent. Episodes are themed based on specific genres or classes of films being covered. Unfortunately, A Damn Movie Podcast jeopardized our attention span by the length of their episodes. Several are nearly two hours in length. Audio production was highly inconsistent suffering from low volume levels that needed to be turned up to be intelligible.
