Cthulhu

Category: Literature

This show is inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, a horror and sci-fi writter, and his Cthulhu Mythos. Lovecraft lived during and wrote about the early 1900′s. History and music from that period are also part of this podcast. The host offers a sufficient reading voice that keeps listeners engaged. Episodes are broken-up into three segments. 1920′s music separates the two portions of stories read by the host. Recently, parts of “Through the Brazilian Wilderness” by Teddy Roosevelt have been read first followed by a Lovecraft story. The music in between stories provides a smooth distinction and adds more “atmosphere” to the show. The format is unusual but works. This show is worth checking out.

Mustache Rangers

Category: Comedy

Aric McKeown and Corey Anderson are The Mustache Rangers who explore space and beyond in this weekly serial comedy, adventure, sci-fi, old time podcast. Aric and Corey pose as Commander Major Alastair Q. Bastidious and First Lieutenant Rutuger G. Phooneybaum. Mustache Rangers’ humor
can be described as “deadpan.” The podcast distances itself from other comedic podcasts by the historical flavor the show exhibits; just listen to the introduction of the podcast. Alastair and Rutuger seem to create stories through a series of improves. One will start a subject leaving the other to create the scenario. By the end, listeners have been taken through an adventure. We found ourselves laughing through some episodes because of the sheer randomness or sillyness of the humor, but other episodes left us anxiously awaiting the end. We recommend that Mustache Rangers keep their episode length shorter as brevity works in their favor. The longer episodes demonstrated how the show can lose direction. Finally, we admire the consistency Aric and Corey demonstrate in releasing new content.

Women Be Trippin

Category: Society and Culture

Women Be Trippin is designed for men who do not understand women and how the female gender behaves. Hosts Eddie and Dave desire to help
men better understand women who seem to be vague and have double standards at times. As an afterthought, they also help women understand
guys’ points-of-view on things like sex, break-ups, and maturity. The guys often bring on female guests to answer questions and converse. Unfortunately, Women Be Trippin appears to have left the podcasting world. No episodes have been released since this past summer of 2009. Women Be Trippin has a lot of potential and is full of “could have been” possibilities. In regards to the sound quality, we could have done without the stereo effect of each person speaking in either the right or left side of our ear buds and headsets. Many find the effect annoying and unprofessional as we did. Despite all this, we really enjoyed this show.

Hotcakes

Category: Comedy

Hotcakes is a weekly discussions between TeezeCrost, Gwardo, and other guests. Unfortunately, it does not take much listening to notice that Hotcakes is using the tired formula of recording friends talking together. The podcasts has limited appeal for listeners because the majority of the humor is dependent upon inside jokes of which only the hosts and guest(s) are aware. Additionally, episodes tend to be very long and have poor sound quality. If bad language is a problem, this is not the show for you. Hotcakes does have potential with guests that are seemingly ready to interact with their listening community. We hope the hosts are able to freshen-up the format and content so that it appeals more to an outside audience.

Uhh Yeah Dude

Category: Comedy

Uhh Yeah Dude is intensely consistent with shows released every week. This has led to the high number of episodes already produced: almost 200 as of this review. Episodes are recorded either in front of an audience or with the two hosts alone in the studio. Regardless, episodes have a “stand-up comedy” feel. Seth and Jonathan discuss the latest in current news and give hilarious commentary. Somewhat regular segments include Jonathan’s poetry, “what would be worse?,” “which would your rather?,” and questions people submit to Parade Magazine. Seth and Jonathan have masterfully united their community of listeners who are actively involved with the podcast. As a result, Uhh Yeah Dude has its own UYD (Uhh Yeah Dude) index which is a categorization of topics discussed in the podcast. If this is your type of humor, you’ll love this show.

Hey Brooklyn

Category: Arts

Hey Brooklyn is a show dedicated to highlighting the creative people of Brooklyn, New York. Host Amber provides variety for each episode by
interviewing different people. Artists such as musicians, writers, painters, and actors are featured along with small business owners and inventors. Amber has an interesting interview technique that has grown progressively more effective. Additionally, Hey Brooklyn has zeroed in on a target market. It may also be showing companies and agencies a new way to find eclectic talent. The sound quality is great as the show is professionally produced. Hey Brooklyn did not dazzle us but is certainly worth a listen and may get your “creative juices” flowing.

Edgy Podcast Reviews 85: Max Buffers Media Museum-I Know Everything-Forgotten Classics

Max Buffers Media Museum

Category: TV and Film

The foundational goal for Max Buffers Media Museum is to be a satirical to display how poor television programming has become and to illustrate ways producers treat audiences. However, Max Buffer and Terry Bland are the host’s fictitious alter egos. Daniel believes the lack of connection between the hosts and alter egos leads to the detriment of the podcasts. New listeners will not have an clue what the concept of Max Buffers Media Museum truly is. Listeners will need to specifically research to understand the foundation of the podcast. This is a lot to ask of new listeners. Once listened to in proper context the high brow humor and satirical jokes begin to present themselves.

I Known Everything

Category: Comedy

Adam Sherlock and Levi Lebo have conversations about their lives broken into different chapters based on the topic. The hosts are frequently joined by guests that discuss embarrassing childhood stories, weird news, and sexuality. According to I Known Everything the joke is seeing “how little they DO know about any given topic”. There are humorous stories that are great for a group of friends to record together for further posterity. However, Daniel and Jana differ significantly as to the audience and size of the target market I Known Everything will reach. (Listen to the audio show to learn more). We applaud the use of enhancing the podcasting which allows listeners to skip forward or move backward to specific times in the show. Finally, despite the difference in opinions, Daniel and Jana agree the length of the podcast is too long with the most recent episode (Episode 25) running two hours.

Forgotten Classics

Category: Literature

Julie is the host that aspires to inspire readers to find and remember classic literature that modern society tends to overlook. Julie is a story teller that read select classics while lending accents and other tone variations to assist in separate character dialogue. After reading chapter(s) from a book Julie then follows up with feedback and additional discussion regarding the story. Forgotten Classics begin each episode with reviews of podcasts labeled Podcast Highlights that Julie has heard that she finds inspiring if not interesting. It does not take long after listening that you feel an invitational hospitality. However, we would recommend that Julie possibly change-up her selections or at least the length of the books read. For example, reading through Uncle Tom’s Cabin took most of 2009. For much more about Forgotten Classics please listen to the audio portion of Edgy Podcast Reviews.
