The Dark Hours Horror Podcast
Category: TV and Film
This “celebration of horror and cinema” is hosted by Grey and usually Cutter. All types of horror films, from independent movies to those from the 1980′s, are reviewed. Grey also enjoys guest interviews. This podcast is “spiced up” with the use of clips from movies being reviewed and other sound effects. Grey values listener feedback and often spends quite a bit of time at the end of each episode discussing it. The lengths of episodes are sporadic. Some episodes are titled “Dark Cuts” or “Dark Minutes” and may range from 10 minutes to 2 hours in length. It is evident that much time is spent in post-production because of the film clips and music throughout. Unfortunately, it sounds as if the host(s) are sharing a microphone, and sound quality is lacking as a result.

More Than One Lesson
Category: Religion and Spirituality
Host Tyler Smith uses movie reviews and themes to present a Christian lesson. Most movies he discusses are not Christian films and are generally mainstream, such as The Hurt Locker, Hellboy, and Iron Man. Tyler has a degree in Film/Video and was a Film Production intern so he certainly knows his stuff. In addition to discussing plot summary, actors, and writers, he also relates the main movie to another film that is somehow similar or has a related lesson to be learned. Tyler does not pretend to have religion figured out and is pretty relatable. While at times he takes the role of “teacher” with listeners being students, his conversational tone is easy to listen to. Organization could help Tyler make a better show. It would keep him from over-explaining himself and being repetitive. It might also reduce his use of “ums” and “you knows.”

Shoddy Radio
Category: Comedy
If completely random and explicit conversation is your thing, check out Chris, Ben, and Danny on Shoddy Radio. Topics of discussion range from football players in the 1990′s to comparing music groups to rating women’s anatomy. While random, the guys do stay on topic. These guys have been at this podcast thing for a while and have over 90 episodes released as of this review. They also keep episode length to 45 minutes or less. We enjoyed the intro music and appreciated the “changing of radio stations” bumpers. While some material was funny, some was quite offensive. Jana even described it as demeaning. Best guess: guys in their teens and twenties will like this one; others, especially the ladies, not quite so much.
