Sounds From the Yellow Room
Category: Music
Sounds From The Yellow Room is a podcast dedicated to promoting independent music and artists. Host Glenn Pellito acts as a radio DJ offering not only the selection of music but also the background of the artist or band along with contact information. Glenn offers a diverse selection of music from Acoustic, Blues, and Folk to Hip-Hop and R&B. Glenn's vocals and persona are a nice blend of tonality, and his enthusiasm is nearly tangible. The show moves at a nice, quick pace too. However, as of this writing we had not heard a new episode since May 11, 2009. Sounds From the Yellow Room's schedule had been somewhat consistent with the release of new episodes every other week. Also, this podcast's audio file is excessive at one hundred and thirteen megabytes. Glenn needs to work on compressing the audio size without having to sacrifice quality. Daniel was not able to get past the numerous technicalities while Jana was better able to enjoy the music selection.

Answer Me This
Category: Comedy
Helen and Olly are the main hosts of this unique podcast. The premise of Answer Me This is listeners writing in or calling with questions for Helen and Olly to answer. These questions range from the very trivial and silly to the serious. The host's substantial talent is immediately noticeable. The hosts are creative in supplying jingles that are catchy and constantly promote the phone number to call, email to write, and web site to visit. It comes as no surprise that Helen and Olly attract a participating audience from all over the world who provide the podcast with many questions. Unfortunately, the chemistry between Helen and Olly and the flow of the show are periodically interrupted by Martin "The Sound Man" who speaks with a heavily reverbed voice. The effect gives Martin a "god-like" sound that distracts from what Helen and Olly are discussing. However, the podcast scores high in entertainment and humor and should be checked out by curious listeners.

The Improvised Radio Show
Category: Games and Hobbies
Old-timey radio shows are brought into the 21st century with The Improvised Radio Show with Sara Hood, Zach Kaplan and Matthew Reiss. These voice actors perform a story, complete with sound effects, in about 30 minutes. We loved the idea of this show but found a number of technical problems throughout. Most notably, the volume levels desperately need to be leveled. Each story would be easier to follow if characters did not talk over one another and character names were repeated. The more recent episodes are showing signs of improvement. We suggest in order to help listeners become familiar with the actors is to dedicate an episode every four or give episodes to provide a behind the scenes. Also, The Improvised Radio Show needs an introduction that explains the improvised technique to prepare listeners for what they are about to hear. We were surprised to discover the overlook in The Improvised Radio Show not listed in iTunes. If you are a fan of stories and old-timey radio shows, you may want to check this one out. However, until The Improvised Radio Show is better refined we suggest you explore other podcasts.

The Atomic Geeks

Category: Comedy
The Atomic Geeks is true to its name with an appeal to geeks. Show content includes topics from favorite television series, toy lines, movies, books, and more. We are not convinced The Atomic Geeks should be in the category of Comedy. Games and Hobbies or TV and Film would be a more accurate label in our opinion. The hosts have enough differences of opinion to keep the conversations interesting. Intense debates are included that many listeners will surely find entertaining. Regarding sound quality, we would strongly suggest The Atom Geeks even out their vocal levels. We suggest, as always, The Levelator which is free software that will do much of the normalization process. The Atom Geeks could also include bumpers or jingles to help the format of the podcast flow. Overall, fans of movies, TV, and comics, who don't mind long episodes, will like this show.

The Scream Podcast

Category: Comedy
The Scream Podcast is hosted by Brad, Subby, and Sean of Melbourne Australia. Their Australian accents add to the hosts' charm. Interesting yet disturbing true stores about the hosts' lives are told frequently, with Episode 16 being a prime example. While funny, this show is not hilarious. Unfortunately, there are no regular segments to look forward to in each episode. The Scream Podcast's first episode was released in October 2007. As of this writing, there have been a total of only 20 episodes, thus demonstrating the lack of consistency in new releases. Having lost two hosts recently, the remaining three are missing some momentum in regards to the energy of the show. This loss is evident in the most recent episode, Episode 20. Cutting back on episode length may help the energy levels to stay up from start to finish.

The Olin Ezra Show

Category: News and Politics
Coming directly from Michigan, The Olin Ezra Show claims to be Detroit's underground talk revolution. Hosts Olin Ezra, Dilan Tyler, Big Baby P, and Sarah Force are the smooth talking tones behind the microphone. The Olin Ezra Show features exclusive interviews and songs from many local and high-profile artists. For this reason, the podcasts does not seem fit in the category of News and Politics. There are brief discussions about the political opinions of the hosts but not much more. The Olin Ezra Show is about the music and the industry that surrounds it. If audio has flash and style, then The Olin Ezra Show captures it with its high audio quality and consistent episode releases.

Our Big Dumb Mouth
Category: Comedy
Our Big Dumb Mouth earns the "Explicit" tag. Each episode starts strong with witty bantering and faster responses from the hosts. Obscure news, hosts' personal lives, and prank calls are all part of the show. However, as the episodes progress, the humor evolves into crudeness with more rambling. Our Big Dumb Mouth is a funny podcast, and many listeners will enjoy the content. Yet humor is subjective, and we would not recommend the podcast to listeners sensitive to offensive content and language. Regarding production quality, we were very pleased to hear how tightly controlled the audio levels were, especially with many hosts often raising their voices to be heard. The background laugh tracks inserted throughout the show were successful in adding to the comedy.

The Coffeebreak with Mr Coffeesleeve
Category: Comedy
The Coffeebreak with Mr. Coffeesleeve introduces the world's first talking coffee sleeve. His co-host his Nev Moore, and the podcast is unlike any we have come across. Mr. Coffeesleeve and Nev banter before what sounds like a sound-effect filled live audience complete with laugh tracks. The style of production gives the show a unique sound with flanging altered voices. The hosts have a lot of vocal talent that successfully keeps the portrayed characters distinct. However, the problems occur when the audio effects and voices become unintelligible. The hosts often speak too quickly, and the effects come across too strong which can confuse the listener. We hope The Coffeebreak with Mr Coffeesleeve can better communicate the podcast theme. We really enjoyed the uniqueness and audio production offered, but if listeners cannot understand the podcast, what is the point?

The Night Barbers
Category: Comedy
Tommy, Skeeter, Rob, Moochie, and Mole make up The Night Barbers crew. The hosts were once in a band together but have since turned to podcasting about stupid people in the news. Kate, the computerized hostess, is a text-to-speech voice similar to Microsoft Windows Vista's "Anna." The Nights Barber Show is not for those easily offended and certainly earns the Explicit tag. Sound production is very professional and no doubt due to the hosts' studio experience. Audio levels were always maintained with a refreshing amount of reverb giving vocals a "warm" tone. Another positive in The Night Barbers favor is the consistency of new episode releases. The Night Barbers Show has congenial talent, great production but questionable comedy regarding the podcast's offensive content.

Chicken Pop Pod

Category: Comedy

This entertainment-driven podcast discusses retro 1980's movies, games, books and more. Most anyone who grew up during this time will be reminded of things not thought of in a long time while enjoying a good laugh. The many hosts are all male so some girl-specific things (like Cabbage Patch Kids and Rainbow Bright) are not discussed. The episodes with whole numbers such as Episode 37, are content driven by the hosts. Episodes with a .5 include listener feedback content. Chicken Pop Pod is fun, releases content consistently, and has creative content-presentation ideas. The episodes vary in length from the manageable forty five minutes to the overly long hour and forty minutes. Another possible hindrance is the small amount of inside jokes that are known by the hosts but not by the audience. Overall, we encourage listeners to try out Chicken Pop Pod for themselves and grab a laugh or two.

Fell Calls

Category: Games

Fell Calls! is not for the average gamer who is comfortable playing his Xbox 360 and PS3. Fell Calls! focuses on Warmachine along with Iron Kingdoms RPG from Privateer Press. Shane, Mark, Jim, and Ryan dive deep into character analysis and story arcs while discussing strategy and controversial topics. Because we were unfamiliar with these games when we began listening to Fell Calls!, we did not understanding what was being discussed. After listening to several episodes we still had not gained an understanding of Warmachine with Iron Kingdoms RPG. We were forced to research outside the information the podcast presented. This is what we learned: Warmachine is a table top game that represents a military operation. Iron Kingdom is a campaign setting for the d20 fantasy RPG system. The setting was created by Privateer Press. Fell Calls! does not offer a way for curious listeners to understand the topics discussed. Only the highly knowledgeable will have a chance to understand the hosts and the content. The hosts provide a bland listener experience, and the show is desperately needing segments or background music. Fell Calls! will appeal to a very targeted niche; a small niche at that.

Film Flim Flam

Category: TV and Film

Film Flim Flam is a relatively new podcast hosted by Derrick Shadowens. Derrick reviews and discusses movies in-depth by using clips from movies and soundtrack themes. Basically, the podcast is a behind-the-scenes look at how certain movies were made, why certain movies never made it to completion, and how stories are turned into films. Film Flim Flam takes a lot of production time and effort. Derrick does an admirable job of ensuring all the audio does not suddenly elevate and drown out his voice. For help in better normalizing audio within the podcast, we recommend "The Levelator" from The Conversations Network. A noticeable mistake that many new podcasters make is repeating themselves; Derrick repeats himself a lot. What would take most two minutes to say takes Derrick five. Also, Film Flim Flam episodes have incredible file size for an audio podcast. The last episode to which we listened was 145 Mb. The reason for the inflated size is how the MP3 is encoded. The bit rate was set to 192 kps and released in stereo. Derrick may want to try a more manageable 96 kps and set the audio to mono. The problems listed can be easily fixed. Film Flim Flam has great potential for presenting content in a entertaining and informative manner. We liked it!

This fast-paced Disney podcast is hosted by Matt Hochberg, Mike Scopa, Mike Newell, and Len Testa. These guys are entertaining while providing great reviews and information for planning a trip to Disney World. The hosts are very qualified and involved with Disney media. Each episode has one clear theme that is discussed, and we loved the topics. At times, we felt "out of the loop" at the beginning of the shows because of ongoing discussions and jokes to which we were not privy (having not been long-time listeners). Additionally, host Matt tends to speak too quickly and at times has poor diction. Never-the-less, this is a fun and helpful show.

While many shows need at least two hosts to stay entertaining, Van is perfect on his own. He is funny, has a great voice for radio, and is extremely organized. The show is always professional with equal volume levels and music throughout. We enjoyed the News From Around the World and Top 7 segments. Also, all topics and interviews are clear and concise in the delivery. Whether you are planning a trip to Disney or just a big fan, you can't go wrong with show.

Interested in all things Disney? Check out Pete Warner and the "round table" hosts in this relaxed "average Joe" look at Walt Disney World. They have a discussion podcast released every Wednesday and then an e-mail/voicemail podcast released each Thursday. The chemistry of the hosts is good as they all seemed like close friends. This show also incorporates "Disney Land Correspondents" so that both parks are covered. Unfortunately, this podcast didn't sell us on Walt Disney World. We found out more negative things about the parks than positive. As a result, we felt this show would be better aimed at those wanting to know about Disney as a company rather than those simply planning a vacation there. Additionally, this show is usually over an hour in length and could use more regular segments.

The premise of Boxcutters is simple: it's a show about all things television. Hosts Josh, Brett, and John broadcast from Australia and have a lot of fun reporting the latest gossip in television, and their humor bleeds into the content. Well placed segments in the show help listeners better absorb the content and assist in the flow of the podcast. Segments include News, Letters to Boxcutters, Quiz, and Pork. We'd love to see "Grasping at Straws" become a regular segment as well. Deserving of attention is the creativity used to lead into each part of the podcast. These transitions are concise, comedic, and attention-getting. After small talk, the hosts jump into an analysis of the television show of topic. What may be most refreshing about Boxcutters is the focus on television media that includes other countries' television programs. This is quite the contrast to the saturated market of "TV and Film" podcasts from an all American point of view. The problem found with Boxcutters is technical; there are several RSS feeds. We were not able to receive the most recent episodes when using the iTunes feed. As of this writing, we had to acquire the RSS field found on Boxcutter's site.

Something Live

Category: Music

Something Live has a very interesting and unusual premise for the podcast. Host P.J. Shapiro records and mixes live music from The Cantab Lounge in Massachussetts. By recording, P.J. is archiving music that would be lost to history and provides exposure for bands that may never be discovered in mainstream music. The sound quality is well produced and a wonderful alternative to recording from a fixed microphone which would result in distortion, barrage of ambient noise and other complications. The result of P.J.'s recording via inputs into a mixer is music we can enjoy and is pleasant to listen to. We liked that Shapiro informs listeners about the song the band is playing in addition to explaining where listeners can find more information about the artists. P.J. includes interviews with musicians who frequently discuss the challenges of playing live. Music styles include Blues, Folk, Acoustic and more. The weakness found in Something Live is the heavy inconsistency and minuscule selection of episodes.

Angry and Cliff podcast

Category: Comedy

Angry and Cliff Podcast is hosted by Mr. Angry, Cliff, and guests such as Fat Jim and Ickle. While the guest hosts vary in their ability to blend with the main hosts, Mr. Angry and Cliff demonstrate an incredible ability to play off one another. The English based comedy is quick on whit, and the podcast has some of the best transitional segments we have heard. We liked the "This Day in History" segment and the excellent job of editing. All in all, this is a very funny show packed into 30 minute episodes.
