What Would Lloyd Say

Category: Comedy

Lloyd Garver, a frequent opinion and humor columnist, hosts this show about his feelings towards things he encounters in daily life. At least we assume that's where the questions he asks himself come from. Topics are usually political but also include things like commercials, insurance, and even life-span. Each episode is short at five minutes or less, which leaves little time for extras like an intro, outro, or music. While the show did not come across as a comedy, Lloyd's answers, which range from harsh to light-hearted, certainly made us think and brought a smile to our faces. We also wondered if Lloyd would be willing to take questions or topics from listeners and shares his thoughts on those as well.

Game Center: RPG PC and Console Podcast

Category: Hobbies

This teen/pre-teen-focused podcast is hosted by 14 year old Zorba and gang. We are impressed that such a young podcaster is so consistent despite his youth. Basically these guys keep up with the latest video and computer games coming to market. They play as many as they can and give their opinions. It is obvious that Zorba wants his show to be credible, but there are a number obstacles in his way. There is overwhelming background noise and co-hosts often come across as unprepared. Never-the-less, Zorba does keep the show moving along and the language clean. Other portions of the show's production value also leave a lot to be desired. There does not appear to be any post-editing, which would help tremendously. Also, running sound through a PC card or investing in a cheap mixer would substantially increase audio production. We look forward to returning to RPG PC and Console Podcast at a later time and observing how the podcast has grown.

The Passion Podcast

Category: Religion and Spirituality

The Passion Podcast is a production of the Passion House ministry in Alpharetta, Ga. which focuses on college-aged students. In the Passion Podcast, host Louie Giglio updates listeners about the ministry. Listeners can expect to hear from Christian celebrities such as Beth Moore, Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, and Matt Redman. Lately Giglio has taken the Passion ministry on a world tour to places like Africa, Indonesia, Europe, and South America. He uses the podcast as a way share his experiences with listeners and to encourage believers. Giglio also uses podcasting's greatest strength: creating a community. As podcasters we could not help but listen in excitement as Louie spoke about podcasting within international cities, often times accompanied by a translator. Episodes are generally 45 minutes to an hour in length, but are not published consistently. Burst of episodes released are often followed by long voids of new content. Despite this fact, this is a very uplifting show and worth listening to.

Jason Talbot and Edward Perot are the voices and writers that make up New World Orders. This podcast audio novel joins the ranks of those written by popular authors such as Scott Sigler and J.C. Hutchinson. New World Orders is a free podcast novel, written under the pseudonym Edward G. Talbot. Suspense and conspiracy make up the plot of the novel, and younger listeners may not be ready for the violence and bad language. The book is broken down into three parts with about ten 30 minute episodes per part for easy listening. The male readers do a great job creating distinct voices for each character. The women readers, one in particular, have trouble matching their voices to the emotions of the characters they play. This really distracts from the story itself. On the plus side, a summary of the previous episode is given at the beginning of each new episode so that readers are caught up on the story. New World Orders can increase its entertainment value by adding music and story-driven sound effects. Including these extra steps will make editing the story more difficult but would be worth the rewards.

Amateur Traveler Podcast

Category: Places and Travel

Host Chris Christensen interviews world travelers each week in this podcast. A large number of locations have been discussed as Chris has almost reached the 150 episode mark at the time of this review. Listeners are sure to find out the best times to go to a certain location, what to see while there, how much money to expect to spend, and the best places to stay. Chris does a great job of eliciting valuable information from those he interviews, but the strength of the show is heavily dependent on the interviewee. We found that those who could describe the geography and social atmosphere of the chosen location from personal experience really stood out. Amateur Traveler Podcast offers an enhanced version of the show which allows for the inclusion of pictures and links to discussed sites; this is invaluable to listeners that consume content stationary. Unfortunately, editing out the "umms" and pauses of the conversation was too tight at times leaving fragmented sentences.

Design for the Real World

Category: Design

Public Radio International offers Design for the Real World. The podcast gives listeners an invitation to look at the genius of everyday things and is presented bi-weekly by host Curt Anderson. This nicely produced show has cute bumpers and each episode is about 5 minutes in length. A different guest presents the topic in each episode. The variation of new narrators that are knowledgeable about the subjects adds additional seasoning and flavor. Topics include all kinds of things, including ice cream cones, swimming pools, and cameras. The addition of music, background sounds, and other effects greatly add to the shows entertainment value as well.

The Connections Show

Category: Podcasting

Host Stan Relihan produces this weekly show that centers around the importance of networking, specifically social media networking. While many types of business networking sites are discussed, most of the focus is on LinkedIn, the world's largest business network. Stan interviews those who have benefited greatly from online networking as well as those who are influential in this area. Guests are intelligent and relevant to the purpose of The Connections Show. Listeners learn the etiquette, benefits, restrictions, and limitations of LinkedIn as well. Stan uses his extensive knowledge of LinkedIn to provide resources for the needs of businesses. Each episode last about 20 minutes and is very helpful and informative.

Trivia War Podcast

Category: TV and Film

Trivia War Podcast is a unique blend of Jeopardy, Hollywood Squares, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire. This quiz show focuses on popular movies and TV shows. Hosts Sue, Josh, and Robin lead several types of trivia quizzes throughout each episode. There are three rounds of questions that include true/false, general knowledge, and "Who Said That" (quotes). Our favorite segment is "Stump Josh" where Josh must link two actors by movies in six degrees of separation or less. The trio also discusses their Top 5 in a given category each week. Listeners are told what the following week's topic will be so they can watch a few of the TV shows or the movie to be prepared. The strength of Trivia War Podcast is the hosts. If one were removed from the group, the podcast would lose its unique appeal. We were pleasantly surprised by the creativity and persona of this well produced podcast.

The Signal

Category: TV #38; Film

Firefly fans will find a second family in The Signal. Hosts Les and Kari lead this podcast for fans of the show Firefly, the movie Serenity, and its writer Joss Whedon who is also known for the shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Despite Firefly's amazing popularity, the show was canceled after only 14 episodes leaving fans begging for more. The Signal delivers with news on Firefly, interviews, and fan material. This show is professionally done and entertaining bumpers add to the quality. Sound bytes from the show and movie including the theme music are instrumental in enhancing the show as well. Listener emails and voice mails are played so fans can stay in contact with other Firefly lovers. Reviews of other science fiction shows are given too. The Signal is successful in its mission to recruit "Brown Coats " and to keep existing members informed.

Host Holly Braly takes listeners into a deeper understanding of our oceans each week. This show is well written, educational, and interesting, no doubt because it comes from the University of Texas Marine Science Institute. Each episode is two to three minutes in length and has soft music playing in the background. The soft ambient music and Holly's tone has the feel of a prerecorded audio bite heard at a museum or aquarium exhibit. Listeners interested in the niche subject will enjoy the weekly narrations. Science and the Sea will appeal to those with short commutes and can be used as an additional educational tool in the classroom. However, we believe listeners seeking more detailed content will skip this show for something longer.

2600: Off The Hook

Category: Technology

As a production of the 2600 Magazine, or the Hackers' Quarterly, this show is sure to bring controversy. 2600 has a long and rich history of being in the public eye. Off the Hook offers integral insights in technology but is also able to zoom out and make the content applicable to prevalent social issues. In addition, recent episodes have thoroughly covered the HOPE Conference. This podcast is actually taken from a radio show of the same name on WBAI. The transition from radio to the podcast-format was rough, particularly in the area of sound quality. Because the radio show is an hour long, the podcast episodes are long as well. Many people participate as hosts in each show, but Manuel Goldstein seems to be the regular. We applaud Off the Hook for offering listeners a variety of methods to attain the content. The podcast is simulcast via streaming audio and over shortwave radio. The episodes can also be sampled at various "bit rates" and file formats including OGG. However, the RSS feed for Off the Hook is fraught with complexity and unreliability. We hope Off the Hook will offer a more compelling show that is specific for podcasters in the future.

Stuff You Should Know

Category: Science Culture

Staff writers from howstuffworks.com, Josh Clark and Charles "Chuck" Bryant, host this weekly show. Topics are usually taken directly from articles either of these two has written for the website. Basically any question to which you'd like to know the answer is covered on this show. From the "is it possible?" and "how does this happen?" to "why would this occur?," listeners are sure to be entertained. One topic is covered in each five minute episode. This podcast offers the types of unique and helpful information that can be used to impress friends and colleges. Josh and Charles work well with one another and are well spoken and professional; the sound quality is great. The format of the podcast makes digesting the information easy too. Stuff You Should Know gives information listeners will benefit from knowing (thus the name).

The Force Cast

Category: TV #38;amp; Film

The Force Cast is the official podcast of theforce.net. This, of course, is a site totally dedicated to Star Wars. Each episode is recorded live on Wednesdays, and live chat sessions are available during the recording so listeners can participate. Hosts Jason and Pete are enthusiastic fans without being "cultish." They do a great job keeping this show entertaining despite its insanely long length (about 2 hours per episode). Jason and Pete are highly collaborative with countless behind-the-scenes enthusiast who research information about art, trivia, interviews, and fan film creators. Listeners are updated on everything from cast members' birthdays to the latest news about feature films and upcoming shows, festivals, and conventions. Guests who have had a part in the making of one or more of the Star Wars movies are frequently interviewed as well. This podcast is professionally done and moves quickly. Impressive, most impressive.

RVANews The Bopst Show

Category: Music

Host Chris Bopst brings audiences this podcast full of an eclectic mix of music and political satire each week. To add to the entertainment, funny intros are the norm for each episode. These intros are full of "adult content" and are not intended for young audiences however. As a general rule of thumb, Chris will play four songs in a set before acting as the DJ and telling listeners the song titles and singers. Because shows have only three of these sets, Chris himself is rarely heard. As for the music, a huge variety is covered. In fact, there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to the selections or the order of play. No music genre is left untouched; country, ethnic, instrumental, and everything in between is represented. Despite our respect for Chris Bopst's editing skills and originality, the podcast seems to get lost and becomes confusing with the high volume of audio assaults. Each episode is pretty long at about an hour, but this show is probably better than radio. If nothing else, parts are funny and listeners can always skip songs they don't like.

Gun Rights Advocates Podcast

Category: News #38; Politics

Gun Rights Advocates Podcast demonstrates the wide reach of podcasting. Mark Vanderberg is the passionate host of the show, is a huge advocate of the Second Amendment Movement. He has an in-depth understanding of the US Government and how "Grass Roots" movements can make a difference on a national scale. He has been presenting and supporting his views for gun ownership for almost 100 episodes at the time of this review. Episodes are educational and discuss topics such as the different types of guns and the proper way to keep yourself and others safe from improper use of firearms. While Mark is not the best or most concise speaker, he regularly has "Guest Episodes" where listeners submit content that is played on the show. In this way he offers listeners who are afraid of the more technical aspects of creating a podcast an outlet. Listeners simply commit to host a show about gun rights then send the audio file to Mark; he takes care of the necessary tasks such as RSS feeds. Mark also frequently plays clips from news programs about the topic of gun ownership, sales, permits, and the like. It is exciting to listen to Mark and his infectious belief in podcasting.

What's New Now

Category: Gadgets

This bi-weekly podcast presented by the conglomerate "Ziff Davis" gives the latest in tech news in ten minutes or less. What's New Now reports announcements of new gadgets while offering friendly editorial reviews. All of this information is given in a quick and concise manner. The show is well produced and sounds professional. The hosts vary from week to week but are all qualified to lead this show. The irregularity of the hosts, however, keeps the "feel" of the show unstable and uncertain. This can cause confusion for the listener. Also, the East and West Coast Editions advertised each week have not settled into any type of consistency either. Never-the-less, What's New Now offers a lot of promise and we look forward to hearing more.

James Dobson on Marriage

Category: Kids #38; Family

This podcast features Dr. James Dobson, who offers advice and encouragement for couples, specifically, those married. Dobson is joined by members from "Focus on the Family" and interview individuals who have had marital and family problems and come through them stronger before. Extremely helpful information that is often "out of the box" and unique is given. Dobson is a good interviewer and keeps his guests on track. On the down side, each episode is only about 15 minutes. Some interviews seemed a bit rushed to fit this time-table, and we would have liked these interviews to be a bit more complete. James Dobson on Marriage is strictly for informative purposes so listeners should not expect to be "entertained." Overall, this is a positive and professional podcast that will help many.

Stereo Radiation

Category: Comedy

Hosts Capital Z and McG lead this 30 to 45 minute comedy show. As with most comedy podcasts the language and topics are for an adult audience. That said, these two keep the raunchy, sexual talk to a minimum. This does not mean that gross, bodily humor is left out however. Capital Z and McG know one another well, and it shows as they introduce new topics and insert their brand of humor. Lots of extras are put into this show. Each intro is unique and sound effects are used frequently. The hosts find and play funny audio media clips and comment on the reporting. This is usually pretty hilarious. The hosts also have a talent for foreign accents. We appreciate how Stereo Radiation introduces new ideas in varying segments of the show. We also admire Stereo Radiation's record of publishing new material consistently.

Destroy All Movies

Category: TV #38; Film

Jim, Richie, Andy, and friends host this weekly podcast about movies. Listeners need to be aware of the explicit tag. Not for the kiddies. In many episodes, recently released movies are reviewed. In other episodes, movies of a common theme are discussed. All of this is done with a lot of humor and plenty of explicit language. It reminds us of the "The Bears" skit from Saturday Night Live. The show is simple and funny as well as passionate. The sound quality is good, and hosts' voices do not overwhelm the microphone. This trait is often difficult to achieve with so many hosts. Because each episodes last about an hour, sound effects and musical bumpers would go a long way to break up the show. We also found that the hosts tend to keep each other laughing and often talk over one another. This humor would be even funnier if listeners were actually in the room with the hosts; as this is not the case, some humor is lost because of the audio format. In all, Destroy All Movies can be described as a collage of absent minded banter with random acapella songs and movies discussed, all with a heart felt perspective.

Poem of the Day

Category: Arts

Poem of the Day delivers exactly what the title promises. A new poem is read for listeners each day compliments of Sonibyte. A nice female voice introduces the podcast, while a male reads the poem. The reader has nice voice inflection and relates the mood of the poem well. Poems range from the Classics to the Contemporary. The sound quality is also great. Each episode lasts two minutes or less. While this podcast certainly does what it sets out to do, it is unmemorable. However, if listeners are wishing to "brush-up" or re-familiarize themselves with poetry, then this short show may be what exactly what they have been looking for.

Baseball History Podcast

Category: Sports #38; Recreation

Host Bob Wright, also known as the "Game Announcer," packs a lot of baseball information into a 15 minute show. Each episode has "innings," or segments, called This Week in Baseball History and Baseball Dictionary. When listeners contribute their own stories, these are shared in the Tour of Baseball Cities segment. "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" is played between segments too. Most people love stories, and Bob tells the story of one player who made history during the current week's dates at some time in the past. Unfortunately, Bob is not an enthusiastic storyteller (at all), so the stories are not as captivating as they could be. On the plus side, Bob does his research and has great diction.
