What The Buc?
Category: Sports and Recreational
What The Buc? covers the Tampa Bay area sports scene. Not surprisingly, most of the show is dedicated to the city's football team, the Buccaneers. The podcast is geared for "the perspective of the informed fan." Additionally, What The Buc? has recently celebrated its third year of the program. "Doc" and Derek "Old School" Fournier are very knowledgeable and certainly passionate about the football team, though Derek can come across as intimidating. The language can be harsh and Derek makes his opinions known. Despite the team having a horrible 2009 season, Derek kept the show upbeat and positive. The show is recorded live and hosts like to interact with the chatroom. Despite not being of much interest to us personally, What The Buc? may certainly appeal to its targeted niche audience.

Wasted Words
Category: Comedy
Wasted Words is a weekly panel discussion program hosted by RJ White. Panelists, who often vary from week to week, are required to be drinking an alcoholic beverage before and during the show. One person is selected to choose a topic that the panel will discuss for the episode. There are segments sprinkled throughout episodes such as Booze News, Word of the Week and the semi-regular Ask the Bartender segment. The topics are usually interesting and at times introspective. Examples include aging, relating to teenagers, and Conspiracy Theories. A disadvantage in having so many panelist in differing locations is the common moments when everyone talks at once. This can make the conversation difficult to listen to despite being interested. Wasted Words was a nice surprise for us and we encourage others to give the show a listen.

The Lesser Nerds Podcast
Category: Tech News
The Lesser Nerds Podcast is a technology news show that covers a broader horizon than reviews of gadgets or the latest rumors associated with Apple. The sound quality and production of the podcast instantly stands out in a positive way. Caralson and Crashboy banter back and forth while moving to the next topic of discussion in a fluid and fast-paced rhythm. Excerpts from music and movie clips, narration and other sound effects resulted in a dynamic listening experience. Fun and unique interviews are also par for the course. The format was intentional and effective while information presented was understandable without needing to be "uber" geeky.

This Week in Interesting
Category: Society and Culture
Ethan Anderson is the host of This Week in Interesting. Ethan chooses topics that he feels "most people have either never heard of or have been misusing on a regular basis." Topics have included the history of Philosophy, Napoleon, speech mistakes, and Socialism. While many topics are interesting, we could not help but feel as though we were being read to during the episode. Most of the content Ethan covers can easily be found on sites such as Wikipedia, though he does give additional sources for more information. The length of the episodes are smartly timed at usually no more than twenty minutes. The audio quality for This Week in Interesting needs improvement, but Ethan makes it known that he is aware of this weakness. Ultimately, this show has taken a leave of absence from the podcasting world before it was even able to really get started. Ethan has joined the Air Force, and we wish him the best. For the time being (and probably through May of 2010), don't look for new episodes.

Double Talk Radio
Category: Arts
Double Talk Radio describes itself as a topic based show including current events, news, sports, and entertainment; basically conversations around the water cooler. Double K is the main host of the podcast followed by Violette and the producer Scotty. The episodes to which Daniel listened mostly featured Violette and Scotty with Double K making an appearance in the most recent episode. Double Talk Radio is crippled to begin with due to the horrible audio quality that results from recording live through Talk Shoe. We are coming to the conclusion that Talk Shoe may be a service that is hindering podcasts more than helping. It was not uncommon to listen to Violette fading in and out due to a poor connection. At times there is audience participation, but the show quickly unravels into three people having blanket conversations that are difficult to understand due to audio quality. We would highly recommend that the hosts of Double Talk Radio record separately while still using Talk Shoe as a service. Finally, post production would be a great addition to enhanced the quality and edit the episodes to a more manageable listening length of time as it is usually well over an hour.

Sock Monkey Sound
Category: Music
Brandon Lutmer, Chip Copeland, and Patrick Delehanty are the hosts of Sock Monkey Sound which is recorded by Mark Gustafson. Sock Monkey Sound is a musically-based podcast but is strongly rooted in the hosts' commentary and analysis. Sock Monkey Sound does an admirable job of keeping the dialogue lively while making sure the music is played. Listeners can expect to hear many genres included in each episode and the latest news regarding the independent musical circuit. Hosts are also passionate about the music and arts culture of their hometown, Rockford, Illinois. We highly applaud the release of episodes in the enhanced podcast format that allows listeners to click on links the hosts are discussing when using a computer or other device. Enhanced podcasts can take a great deal more time to produce but usually result in a more interactive style of listening. The hosts occasionally get lost in making fun of band names or talking about the problems in their home city, but this may increase the entertainment value of the show. Sock Monkey Sound will be familiar to listeners who enjoy music-based podcasts, and it is also unique enough to distinguish itself from other shows.

Our Webkinz Show
Category: Kids and Family
Our Webkinz Show is all about Webkinz, stuffed animals that come alive online. Webkinz pets are plush pets that each come with a unique Secret Code used to unlock activities in Webkinz World. Our Webkinz Show is a refreshing podcast to which to listen. Hosts include kids Jordon, Spencer, Tyler, and their father, David. It was great to hear a father involved in his children's lives using podcasting as a type of family project. The show is progressively growing stronger with each episode. The children are well spoken for their ages, and David has put together an impressive and catchy introduction. The young hosts do their own research to bring listeners the latest Webkinz news. Our only suggestions are to release new content on a more consistent basis along with using better microphone techniques so listeners can hear everyone at once. Simply, Our Webkinz Show is a good family podcasts for those who love these little plush pets. David and family do a good job reaching out to Webkinz fans.

The Great Unknowns Presents
Category: Music
Michael J. is the visionary behind The Great Unknowns Presents. He starts each episode with a short biography of the artist(s) being featured prior to the music portion of the show. Unlike most music podcasts The Great Unknowns Presents will play music from one band per episode thus forgoing the "d.j." approach. Wisely, Michael limits the songs played to 4 or 5 per episode. Michael J. believes "listeners have a short attention spans." Jana says she does, and she really liked the 15 minute episode lengths. The podcast features diverse genres, and Michael keeps it simple and free of complexity by just playing the music. It is great to hear a podcast being used to promote independent music artist(s). Perhaps in the future Michael can include a brief interview or two to help musicians become more relatable to the audience.

CPL Poker Podcasts
Category: Sports and Recreation
Mark Cardenas and Phil Fuehrer are the well matched hosts of CPL Poker Podcasts. The podcast is heavily focused on Minnesota poker and music. CPL is an abbreviation for Cardenas Poker League. General discussions include the many communities one can be a part of to meet fellow poker players along with ways to better experience poker. Mark and Phil feature online sites, home poker leagues, review casinos, and inform listeners about political agendas currently affecting gambling. Listeners will enjoy the strategy discussions on how to vary up poker playing along with applicable tips for bettering one's performance. CPL Poker Podcasts is deliberate in rotating segments through differing episodes to keep the format as fresh as possible. We particularly liked the science segment that related scientific/mathematic principles to poker playing. The most distracting aspect of the podcast is the poor sound quality. The audio sounds very "muddy" with higher frequencies having been chopped off either by the method of recording or post editing. Higher frequencies are needed to balance the lows and provide a more cheerful perception. Also, the downloading of episodes to several test computers was never reliable. The downloads would start and then suddenly quit. This lack of reliability must immediately be addressed. If listeners can not get the content, they will go to another podcast for it. CPL Poker Podcasts has the content poker enthusiasts will enjoy but desperately needs to improve audio quality to reach the maximum amount of listeners possible.

Metal Rules! Radio
Category: Music
Metal Rules! Radio is a podcast stemming from Metal Rules Magazine. Hosts Josh, Jeff, Rob, and Angus discuss heavy metal music. However, the genre of "metal" is so large and encompassing that Metal Rules! Radio was only able to capture a very small portion. Reviews of music and albums, some of which are submitted by listeners, are usually part of the show. An interview with a musician or two is part of virtually every episode as well. While we applaud the effort it must take to line up these interviews, it is blatantly clear that the hosts' interviewing skills need work. Guests are frequently interrupted and asked out-dated and dumb questions. The show length varies greatly from an hour to two hours, and Buck the dog makes his way in and out of the studio as he pleases. This podcast needs some work, but we give it the benefit of doubt that Metal Rules! Radio is reaching a select audience.

Trivial Trivia Podcast
Category: Games and Hobbies
Trivial Trivia Podcast is picking up the torch left by Trivia War podcast which we reviewed in August 2008 (Episode 39). There are three rounds of trivia that are played with a bonus Wikipedia Listener Challenge in each episode. These rounds include movies, music, and general knowledge. The use of music and movie clips adds to the podcast's authenticity. Each episode is about 15 minutes, and the trivia starts right away. Hosts Jeff and Sarah are very amiable and have good chemistry for the banter involved. Daniel was hoping to hear more growth in Trivial Trivia Podcast's format and production with the progression of episodes. The show could improve with quicker momentum by inserting background music or sounds to provide a more distinct atmosphere. We also advise John and Sarah not to fall into the trap of quizzing one another exclusively. It can invite boring repetition that is to be avoided. Trivial Trivia Podcast still has a lot of growing to do, but we believe this podcast is worth a listen if you enjoy trivia.

The Cubby House
Category: Comedy
The Cubby House is based in Australia and is a podcast primarily focused on the Gay community. The hosts are heavily affiliated with the Global Bear Community which is a subculture of the gay/bi-sexual culture. The Bear community is a metaphorical reference for physical type preference; in this case, husky and hairy. We found the information above through our own research because it was never taught or referenced in the show. In addition to discussing sexuality, other frequent topics are video games, movies, and porn. The show is geared for a definite niche audience. We do question the category of Comedy selected and think Society and Culture might be a better fit. Also the episodes need more show structure because the hosts get lost on tangents too frequently. In the latest episode as of this review, one hosts announced his departure, and the other two hosts agreed to restructuring. Perhaps this will result in a better flowing show.

Late Night Nugs
Category: Comedy
The podcast according to host Brady: "Behold our awesome podcast. Prepare yourself for sonic brilliance!" The show is described by the hosts as irreverent, scattered and deviant thoughts all complied together. Despite not living up to the description from Brady, this husband and wife team do have good chemistry. They play well off one another and are quick with their bantering. Late Night Nugs' content is mostly based on Jenny and Brady's interest in television, movies, and YouTube. Vintage television programs are included in the conversation too. Unfortunately, Late Night Nugs does not facilitate audience participation nor are the conversations overly entertaining. Finally, we are disappointed to see the podcast break its consistency by not releasing new content since November 15, 2009 as of this review. Listeners not involved with Brady and Jenny's life will find little of interest.

The Green Room with Sean Green
Category: Comedy
The Green Room with Sean Green deserves the Explicit tag so if you are easily offended, then this podcast may not be for you. The podcast comes from L.A. Talk Radio that provides "24 hrs. a day of radio without commercials." This show employees an intriguing and effective method of bridging traditional radio with the podcast genre. Sean and friends offer solid humor with a "stand-up comedian style." Energy is constantly injected into each segment clearly showing that the hosts are more experienced comedians when compared to most shows in the comedy category. Listeners who are interested in "behind the scenes" stories of stand-up comedians will find The Green Room a must. Football fans will also find fellow aficionados in this show. This podcast is filled with professional vocal talent, audio quality, and style of production.

Walk Up Radio
Category: Comedy
Walk Up Radio is for adults only, at least in our opinion. The show has a fresh approach to creating a podcast. Each episode is recorded live with an audience. The audience can "chime in" at any time while the hosts are talking. This results in a podcast that is not predictable but sure is funny and entertaining. Love or hate the guests, most listeners will identify with at least one of the hosts (Josh, Hunter, Kevin, or Paulie). Contests and games are a regular feature and winners take home concert tickets. This format allows the hosts to be dynamic and keep each other "on their tows." The one fault that is a handicap to Walk Up Radio is the audio format in which the show is presented. Much of the action can only be seen in person or via video so some of the humor is lost in the transformation to audio.
