Cthulhu

Category: Literature

This show is inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, a horror and sci-fi writter, and his Cthulhu Mythos. Lovecraft lived during and wrote about the early 1900’s. History and music from that period are also part of this podcast. The host offers a sufficient reading voice that keeps listeners engaged. Episodes are broken-up into three segments. 1920’s music separates the two portions of stories read by the host. Recently, parts of “Through the Brazilian Wilderness” by Teddy Roosevelt have been read first followed by a Lovecraft story. The music in between stories provides a smooth distinction and adds more “atmosphere” to the show. The format is unusual but works. This show is worth checking out.

Mustache Rangers

Category: Comedy

Aric McKeown and Corey Anderson are The Mustache Rangers who explore space and beyond in this weekly serial comedy, adventure, sci-fi, old time podcast. Aric and Corey pose as Commander Major Alastair Q. Bastidious and First Lieutenant Rutuger G. Phooneybaum. Mustache Rangers’ humor
can be described as “deadpan.” The podcast distances itself from other comedic podcasts by the historical flavor the show exhibits; just listen to the introduction of the podcast. Alastair and Rutuger seem to create stories through a series of improves. One will start a subject leaving the other to create the scenario. By the end, listeners have been taken through an adventure. We found ourselves laughing through some episodes because of the sheer randomness or sillyness of the humor, but other episodes left us anxiously awaiting the end. We recommend that Mustache Rangers keep their episode length shorter as brevity works in their favor. The longer episodes demonstrated how the show can lose direction. Finally, we admire the consistency Aric and Corey demonstrate in releasing new content.

Women Be Trippin

Category: Society and Culture

Women Be Trippin is designed for men who do not understand women and how the female gender behaves. Hosts Eddie and Dave desire to help
men better understand women who seem to be vague and have double standards at times. As an afterthought, they also help women understand
guys’ points-of-view on things like sex, break-ups, and maturity. The guys often bring on female guests to answer questions and converse. Unfortunately, Women Be Trippin appears to have left the podcasting world. No episodes have been released since this past summer of 2009. Women Be Trippin has a lot of potential and is full of “could have been” possibilities. In regards to the sound quality, we could have done without the stereo effect of each person speaking in either the right or left side of our ear buds and headsets. Many find the effect annoying and unprofessional as we did. Despite all this, we really enjoyed this show.
