Edgy Reviews from That Podcast Show 34: Destroy All Movies, Poem of the Day, Baseball History Podcast

****For more detail not included in the written reviews please listen to the show to find out much more.

Destroy All Movies

Category: TV & Film

Jim, Richie, Andy, and friends host this weekly podcast about movies. Listeners need to be aware of the explicit tag. Not for the kiddies. In many episodes, recently released movies are reviewed. In other episodes, movies of a common theme are discussed. All of this is done with a lot of humor and plenty of explicit language. It reminds us of the “The Bears” skit from Saturday Night Live. The show is simple and funny as well as passionate. The sound quality is good, and hosts’ voices do not overwhelm the microphone. This trait is often difficult to achieve with so many hosts. Because each episodes last about an hour, sound effects and musical bumpers would go a long way to break up the show. We also found that the hosts tend to keep each other laughing and often talk over one another. This humor would be even funnier if listeners were actually in the room with the hosts; as this is not the case, some humor is lost because of the audio format. In all, Destroy All Movies can be described as a collage of absent minded banter with random acapella songs and movies discussed, all with a heart felt perspective.

Poem of the Day

Category: Arts

Poem of the Day delivers exactly what the title promises. A new poem is read for listeners each day compliments of Sonibyte. A nice female voice introduces the podcast, while a male reads the poem. The reader has nice voice inflection and relates the mood of the poem well. Poems range from the Classics to the Contemporary. The sound quality is also great. Each episode lasts two minutes or less. While this podcast certainly does what it sets out to do, it is unmemorable. However, if listeners are wishing to “brush-up” or re-familiarize themselves with poetry, then this short show may be what exactly what they have been looking for.

Rating: ★★★½☆

Baseball History Podcast

Category: Sports & Recreation

Host Bob Wright, also known as the “Game Announcer,” packs a lot of baseball information into a 15 minute show. Each episode has “innings,” or segments, called This Week in Baseball History and Baseball Dictionary. When listeners contribute their own stories, these are shared in the Tour of Baseball Cities segment. “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” is played between segments too. Most people love stories, and Bob tells the story of one player who made history during the current week’s dates at some time in the past. Unfortunately, Bob is not an enthusiastic storyteller (at all), so the stories are not as captivating as they could be. On the plus side, Bob does his research and has great diction.
