Flat 29’s Big Book of Everything has a new topic for each episode, or chapters as they are known for this show. The goal is to catalog and discuss the contents of our universe. Examples include discussions about the environment, fear, video games, and the human body. The podcast is full of musical components that are used as transitional elements and to introduce segments. Each episode has a new comedy song, Flat 29’s rhyme, that is written and performed by one of the hosts. The amount of work and time to produce Flat 29’s Big Book of Everything cannot be understated and explains why the show is now released every two weeks instead of weekly. Many of the musical bumpers that are performed and recorded are new every episode too. Flat 29’s Big Book of Everything may be an acquired taste for some listeners to enjoy, but we must admit this is one of the most unique podcasts we have heard. Our concern can be summed up into one phrase: burn-out. As of this review, Flat 29’s Big Book of Everything has eleven episodes released. Hopefully, the amount of work and time will not cause these gifted podcasters to pod-fade.

The Flicks That Church Forgot

Peter Laws, an ordained Baptist minister in the UK, reviews horror films and B-Movies from a Christian perspective. Rev. Laws is currently completing his Masters Degree thesis in Theology and Horror. Yes, you read this information correctly. Peter is well spoken and has the gift to describe the highlights of a film without giving away spoilers. What makes The Flicks that Church Forgot more entertaining than most movie reviews shows is how Peter understands the necessity of telling a good story and establishing a mood. As a result, listeners will be drawn in with the suspenseful background music that adjusts to Peter’s tone of voice. At the conclusion of each episode, Peter discusses spiritual reflections that the film may have inspired or illustrated. Peter ends the podcast with an evangelical point without being condemning or judgmental, which is a welcome change. While new episodes were not released consistently in the beginning, they have been released much more frequently since September of 2009. If you are a fan of horror films, then The Flicks that Church Forgot is for you. Even if horror is not your thing, we encourage podcasters to listen and learn from Peter’s style.

With Cheese

Hosts Ricky, Joe, Harry, and Dave discuss various topics they find entertaining in this podcast. We started out really wanting to enjoy With Cheese and understand the humor. Upon listening however, the desire to understand turned into boredom (Daniel) and irritation (Jana). With Cheese is not afraid to broach any topic no matter how offensive it may be to nationality, race, or religion. Topics discussed include death, fat people, and alien sex. Some content could have been found humorous if the hosts had not been laughing straight into the one shared microphone. This is not pleasant for listeners’ ears and distorts the hosts’ speech. It is safe to deduce that the hosts of With Cheese do enjoy themselves though. Episodes run an average of 50 minutes or more, but in our opinion it is 50 minutes too long. If you are looking for a comedy podcast, than we suggest choosing another one. You may thank us later.
