Astronomy Cast

Hosted by Fraser Cain and Dr. Pamela Gay. This is a very professionally done podcast. Fraser and Pamela have good chemistry together. They present an amiable partnership in which Fraser acts as the student that many teachers wish they had in their class, and Pamela answers each question. Pamela also serves up explanations in an easy-to-understand manner. The hosts do a great job helping listeners to visualize what is being discussed, especially things that occur on a grand scale, such as galaxies, and things on a much smaller level, such as atoms. Transitions between the main topics were a little rushed at times yet still easy to identify. The audio quality is above that found in most other podcasts.

The History of Rome

The History of Rome is hosted by Mike Duncan. The host certainly knows his history. The content is presented logically and with great detail. Unfortunately, the host does not share this information in a listener-friendly way. Basically, after a few minutes, this podcast gets boring. Adding music would help. Making the individuals being discussed more “human” by better describing their appearance and personality would also be a nice addition. Whether Mike is reading the information from his three unfinished novels or from other sources, clearly stating the origin of the information he presents is needed. The History of Rome does excel in the area of sound fidelity and audio normalization.

Make It So

Mike Dawson and Richard Smith manage the helm for this Star Trek related podcast. Harsh language is used frequent so listeners should be advised. The two hosts have a quick wit and rely heavily on sarcasm. This is very funny for those who catch this type of humor easily. However, those who have not sharpened their sarcastic blades in some time may become lost in the hosts’ bantering and possibly heavily offended. The hosts have a wide range of Star Trek knowledge ranging from the original series to the movies and even to fan-films. They have quite a following and even receive Star-Trek related gifts very frequently from their listeners; those are some dedicated fans! These guys do have a tendency to ramble, however, and sometimes the episodes get a bit long. The sound quality is well polished which allows for variations of vocals to be heard.
