Podictionary

Category: History

The talent behind Podictionary is Charles Hodgson. Podictionary wraps listeners in a warm blanket of history and explanation of a new word all in a three minute daily show. Charles Hodgson is a true lover of words. The attention and care given to each term on this podcast is truly unique. Hodgson not only explains the definition of each word but also paints the history behind the term. You are entrusted with the location of term’s birth and how the definitions have progressed through various languages. The intro music employed for the show complements the style Hodgson follows. This would be a great resource for anyone preparing for the SAT’s or the GRE’s and needing to brush up on vocabulary. Charles could improve upon his show by simply adding a bit more enthusiasm to each episode. It is obvious that he is passionate about his content so varying up his tone would simply draw listeners in even more. Charles, we really enjoyed your show and hope that you will continue to introduce us to your rich vocabulary.

Escape Pod

Category: Literature

Hosted by Stephen Eley of Stone Mountain, GA, Escape Pod has a varied cast of readers that will entertain listeners with a new story each week. The show is like a hybrid cross of an audio book, science fiction convention, and a book fair. Escape Pod is strictly Science Fiction in the more classic definition of the genre. It has a Twilight Zone feel except in audio format. Stephen Eley sets the story up in the beginning and talks about how the story applies to real life at the end. Escape Pod allows authors to submit their published and unpublished works to be read for listeners. This is a novel podcast that is a welcome addition into our playlist. If you enjoy audio books and appreciate the genre of science fiction, you will be pleased when you check out this show.

Rating: ★★★★½

On Digital Media

Category: Management & Marketing

On Digital Media hosts include John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons, Ken Gellman and Steve Hatch. The chemistry of the team has been evolving over the course of the show, through trials and mistakes, not to mention the ever illuding Skype headaches. On Digital Media seems to be hitting its stride. In about 45 minutes, they cover all things media, from mergers and CEO changes to failed consumer electronics and advertising. Each host is very educated and works in the digital media field. Their opinions on the latest gadgets and company changes are well supported. When disagreements do occur between hosts, they do not turn into shouting matches and are beneficial to listeners. The tonality of the podcast is upbeat, but spouts of hissing can be heard and are most likely due to the amount of compression and leveling. Skype sound volume is usually well balanced, which is a difficult achievement.
