Wine for Newbies
Category: Food
Wine for Newbies is a guide for listeners interested in learning about the art of wine. Host William Wilson is well-informed and well-spoken. He knows a lot about wine yet still presents himself as unpretentious and helpful to people who are interested in learning. While not especially entertaining, Bill does a good job of being relatable and getting the information across clearly and effectively. He informs listeners about the various types of wine along with vintage and vineyard. Many episodes include tips about the proper wine for the appropriate occasion. This podcast is most useful when listened to chronologically from the first episode as it teaches the basics of wine in the first several shows. Unfortunately, these episodes are listed out of order on the iTunes page, which may make it difficult for “newbies” to get the information in the proper order. Wine for Newbies is comfortable in length and style. It is a great resource for those interested in learning more about wine.

D6 Generation
Category: Games
The D6 Generation is a podcast for people interested in war games, board games, and RPG’s and is released every two weeks. D6G includes segments like “Achievements in Gaming”, news, game reviews, and “When the Wives Attack,” which gives the female perspective on gaming. The hosts’ female counter parts sound just as fun and relaxed as their husbands. Possible spin off? Hosts Russ, Craig, and Raef have great personalities, keep the show fun and entertaining, and seem very well informed, lending credibility to their reviews. On the down side, the hosts are often too close to the microphones which causes audio clipping and discomfort for listeners. Also, the length of many episodes exceeds three hours, which may be a deterrent for all but the most hardcore gamers. Never-the-less, D6 Generation podcast is a winner of a show despite the mentioned complaints.

Planned Brotherhood
Category: Comedy
Planned Brotherhood is a highly explicit but entertaining podcast. Brothers Nick and P.J. sit down for an hour and discuss random topics that occur in their lives. The podcast is completely unstructured and full of “stream of consciousness” discussions. They have good chemistry and story-telling ability. The transitional elements employed place an extra coat of polish on the show’s format. Also, the show is very consistent with the release of new episodes every week. On several episodes, however, the audio levels were too loud or too soft. Additionally, this show could be improved with some structure and the addition of some fun and creative segments.
